Team USA took a massive blow on Sunday after legendary skier Lindsey Vonn was ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. Vonn, who refused to let a torn ACL prevent her from competing in the Winter Games, suffered a violent crash in her very first event on Sunday.
Vonn clipped a gate early in her run at the downhill final. She tumbled and fell, resulting in a broken leg. The 41-year-old was airlifted by a helicopter to a nearby hospital, where she underwent surgery to address the injury.
Vonn will no longer be able to compete in the other events during the Winter Olympics.
On Monday, Team USA announced its decision on the upcoming women’s team combined event. The competition will feature teams of two. One skier will compete in the downhill, while the other will take part in the slalom. This is the first time the team combined event will be held at the Winter Games.
Vonn was supposed to compete in the combined event with her teammates. However, her leg injury has forced Team USA to field a different lineup. U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced its contingent for the inaugural team combined event, which is scheduled for Feb. 10.
Team USA Women Combined Pairs:
According to the announcement, “teams are selected by coaches using results-based criteria from evaluative events, including the 2026 Olympic downhill race.”
Leading the charge for the women is Breezy Johnson, who won Team USA’s first gold medal in the Winter Olympics in the downhill final on Sunday. She will be paired with Mikaela Shiffrin, who is widely regarded as one of the most successful alpine skiers in the history of the sport.
Team USA will also field one men’s combined team, which will feature Kyle Negomir (downhill) and River Radamus (slalom).
