Only a few days remain for POWDER’s Trick of the Winter contest held alongside our friends at 5-Hour Energy, and the submissions are stacking up. The level of skiing these days is absolutely absurd, and, first and foremost, we wanted to say thanks to everyone who’s participated so far. You never know how a competition might go, but you guys delivered.
While POWDER’s staff doesn’t have a say in who wins the Trick of the Winter designation—the competition is judged based on online votes—we do have some favorite submissions so far, including epic bails, huge doubles, and one flawless save.
Check them out below. You can participate in the competition, which wraps up on May 14, by following this link.

We love Air Jordan. We also love a complete line. Big hucks in isolation are always fun to watch, but a well-executed top-to-bottom run is the real crème de la crème—bonus points for the claim after the 360.

In the description of this video, the uploader, Walker Hutchison, specified that before he threw his double, it had snowed seven centimeters overnight. For the Americans reading this, that’s about three inches. For the skiers reading this, that isn’t nearly enough snow to attempt a double backflip off a cliff the size of a two-story building, unless you have the utmost confidence you won’t land on your head. It's a good thing Hutchison knows what he's doing.

It’s fun running a ski contest because you never know who might submit an entry. In this case, it was reigning Freeride World Tour champion Marcus Goguen who, instead of sending in a video of himself dropping a massive cliff, opted instead for some park-inspired trickery. If you weren’t already aware, Goguen’s got range beyond his Freeride World Tour chops.
Goguen calls this trick a 180 to Switch Misty 900. We call it sick.

Another entrant from the blooper reel genre, this quad backflip attempt is a jaw-dropper. We hope our friend here had some Dramamine on hand to recover from the flip-induced dizziness. An ice pack would probably help, too.

A well-executed 360 is like a good steak. They’re both simple, satisfying, and evidence that the best things in life—or skiing—don’t need to be overwrought.

If we ever hold a “best recovery” competition, this video would probably take top marks. Not only does it include an insane save, but the skier’s rotation, which landed somewhere between a Lincoln loop and a cork 360, was just right. The accidental punch front afterwards only adds bonus points, in our opinion.

Classic and terrifying, S&S Couloir is the other famous in-bounds couloir at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wyoming that offers prospective skiers considerable bragging rights. It’s also a great place to score a free base grind or designate a new pair of rock skis.

And then there’s Corbet’s Couloir. One day after the Kings and Queens of Corbet’s, Isaac Kaufman rocked up and made a compelling petition for his inclusion in the competition next winter. His evidence? The platonic ideal of a big mountain backflip.

Possible world’s firsts are exciting, particularly when they involve backflipping over a metal handrail. Grant Gibson, who submitted this clip, suspected he might've been the first skier to flip this feature. While his wasn’t the largest backflip submission we received, it might’ve been the most creative.

Submissions for POWDER's Trick of the Winter contest are due by May 14, 2025. If you've got a clip, submit it! You never know, you could end up walking away with a cool $1,500 cash.
