Let's face it: Skiing is bougie these days. There's a certain amount of ski culture that's been built on roughing it and toughing it out. Tired? Drink more coffee and buck up; there's powder to ski! Sore legs? Have an Advil and stretch your quads; you don't want to miss the big storm!
There are still plenty of ski bums out there and ski bum practices, but if the sport is going to submit to over-priced food and fancy resorts, we skiers might as well take advantage of all the luxury. I'm talking about a spa day, baby. Just writing this, I looked at my blistered feet and thought, "A CBD foot treatment sounds great." Think about how much powder you could ski after a Theragun massage at the Sonnealp in Vail or a little cold-plunge rain shower at the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe.
Luckily, most ski towns have a fancy hotel or two with a spa for you to treat yourself. Here are a few of the very best spas at ski resorts and some of their more unique treatments for skiers.
Located in Vail Village, right by the base of the mountain, the Sonnealp Spa is a convenient and "exquisite" way for skiers to rejuvenate after long days shredding the Legendary Back Bowls. The Sonnealp is 'no frills,' so to speak, and offers a menu of all your favorite traditional spa treatments.
Massages, facials, hand/foot care, and waxing are all available with a list of add-on treatments that include things like CBD treatments or Theraguns for those tired ski muscles. The spa also has an oxygen bar for those experiencing the effects of Vail's high altitude or just in need of a little extra energy in the mountains.
Spruce Peak stands out in more ways than just its signature treatments. The spa offers a complete wellness journey designed to take you beyond just one day at the facility. Along with spa classics like a complete massage menu and Vermont-themed treatments like the Stowe Cider Uber Scrub, The Spa also has options for those looking to be in optimal condition on the slopes.
The Après Ski T-Shock Pain Relief treatment uses heat and cold to accelerate leg muscle recovery, whereas the Healing Recovery Ritual uses cupping and a caffeine shot for all-over relief. The Spa also offers acupuncture and sports medicine and a full-service salon.
For those who want to ski powder and steeps until their legs are jelly and then recoup in luxury, SpaTerre, located inside Teton Mountain Lodge, is a great destination. Teton Mountain Lodge is located right in Teton Village, so you can ski down to the base and head right to the spa.
SpaTerre has indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, and a rooftop hot tub that fits 16 people. Treatments like the CBD Muscle Relief Massage or the infrared sauna are sure to make you feel as good as new after a day in the mountains. Once you've relaxed, you can also pop over to the Spur, Teton Mountain Lodge's restaurant, for a drink and a meal. Pro-tip: try the prickly pear margarita.
The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe is mid-mountain at Northstar California Resort, making it potentially the ultimate ski-in ski-out location. The resort's spa taps into mountain culture and wellness for its signature experiences and features treatments like a "foot ritual" for those achy, post-ski boot feet. They also offer treatments that use CBD oils and collagen masks, which have benefits for those sore muscles after a long ski day.
Spa facilities at the Ritz-Carlton include relaxation areas with cozy fireplaces, a eucalyptus steam room, an outdoor heated lap pool overlooking the ski area, a hot tub and a cold rain-shower plunge. Not too shabby.
Montage was the first five-star property in Big Sky when it opened in 2021 alongside its world-class wellness spa. The 11,000-square-foot facility is home to couples and singles treatment rooms, a pool for pre- and post-treatment relaxation, a fitness center, men's and women's lounges with heated plunge pools, and a full-service salon.
The spa's treatments range from bodywork like a High-Altitude Acclimation massage designed to help your body acclimate faster to rituals like sound baths and Vibra Healing Chakra Balancing. The spa also offers a Peak Performance Recovery massage and a cupping massage to help guests' muscles recover after long days of skiing at Big Sky.
