There's arguably no better time to go volcano skiing than spring, so why not ski one of the PNW's most famous and beautiful volcanoes over Memorial Day weekend? Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood is spinning lifts through Memorial Day weekend before only the Palmer Express lift is open for the summer season.
While summer skiing on Mt. Hood is an experience of its own, it's worth taking advantage of the mountain's four lifts while they're still running. Spring in the PNW can be unpredictable too, so prepare for any conditions, but if you're lucky, you'll get some slushy spring turns and be able to hop in the river for a swim or go for a bike ride at nearby Sandy Ridge after.
For Central Oregon skiers, spring is one of the best times of year to get turns in. Mt. Bachelor is spinning four lifts until their closing day on Memorial Day (May 26). Terrain off Pine Marten and Skyliner is as good as always, but spring is likely the best time of year to get your Summit laps in.
While skiing the Bowl can be pretty variable through the winter, sun softened snow can make for epic turns down some of Bachelor's best terrain. Lifts spin from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., which gives the perfect window for soft turns before things get too sticky. Mt. Bachelor's annual pond skim also takes place Sunday, May 25, to celebrate the end of the season. Once you're done skiing for the day, head to the lot and enjoy Bachelor's lively parking lot après scene, just don't forget your grill!
Mammoth Mountain is known in part for the mega storms it gets that let it stay open late into the season. Up until May 8th of this year, they'd only planned to stay open through Memorial Day weekend, but thanks to a solid snow year, Mammoth will be open into June.
They haven't announced an official closing date yet, but ski season isn't coming to a close in the Eastern Sierras just yet. Ski Mammoth through Memorial Day weekend, watch the Mammoth Yacht Club boat races, and enjoy live music with your après over the holiday weekend.
Palisades Tahoe will be spinning eight lifts and has 72 open runs through Memorial Day weekend. It is the only resort still open in the Tahoe area, and there are still plenty of spring turns to be had. Lifts spin from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.—prime hours for perfectly soft snow. Closing day is May 26, so plan accordingly for your last lift-accessed skiing of the season in Tahoe.
Snowbird got a nice big refresh a couple of weeks ago, making it one of the best spots for spring skiing and one of the only spots still open in the Wasatch. As of May 12, Snowbird is only spinning lifts on weekends, but they'll be open May 17 and 18 and through Memorial Day weekend. There's no beginner terrain available as the Chickadee Lift is also closed for the season. Closing day at Snowbird is May 26, conditions permitting.
After this weekend, Arapahoe Basin is the last resort open in Colorado and has no closing day in sight. A-Basin got more than a foot of snow last week, making for a few rare blower pow days in May and a solid spring refresh.
The mountain is hosting tons of events and live music through the month of May. Memorial Day weekend, Festival of the Brewpubs returns to the mountain for a weekend of craft beer tasting and spring skiing to liven up your holiday weekend.
Just north of Seattle, Crystal Mountain is still open on weekends for skiing through Memorial Day. Take advantage of Washington's spring weather for views of Mt. Rainier and slushy spring turns. Lifts will spin May 17th and 18th, as well as May 24th through 26th. The mountain is hosting the last of their Casamigos Tequila sponsored Beach Parties to close out the season on May 26th.
