Two ski patrollers at Mammoth Mountain, California, were caught in an avalanche at approximately 11:30 a.m. today after roughly six feet of snow fell in 36 hours, according to a statement shared by the ski resort.

The slide occurred during avalanche mitigation work in the Lincoln Mountain area, which, at the time, was closed to the public.

One of the patrollers was recovered at the scene unharmed, Mammoth Mountain said. The other suffered serious injuries and was transported to Mammoth Hospital before being flown out of the area for additional care.

Mammoth Mountain’s lifts have been closed since 12:00 p.m. today.

The incident follows a major Californian storm that produced several feet of snow this week, leading to chairlift opening delays at several ski resorts and elevated avalanche danger in the backcountry.

Mammoth Mountain, per an update shared on social media, expects to resume operations on Saturday.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
