Next winter, skiers will have a new way to jump the pond and ski in Japan.

Starting December 11, United will launch the first nonstop service between the continental U.S. and the powder-skiing hotspot of Sapporo, Japan. The flights will cruise out of San Francisco, California, three times weekly during the winter, with connections from nearly 80 U.S. cities, according to a release shared by United.

Located on the northern island of Hokkaido, Sapporo is a major city with around two million residents. But beyond the metropolitan area are numerous ski resorts and ski towns, including Niseko, known for its hulking snowfall totals. Above all, Hokkaido looms large in the imaginations of skiers everywhere, who flock there each season in search of untouched snow.

Several multi-passes popular in North America include access to resorts on the island. The Epic Pass includes five days at Rusutsu Resort, southwest of Sapporo. The Ikon Pass covers Furano and Niseko United. Six Hokkaido resorts are included with the Indy Pass. All of it has the makings of a memorable trip.

“Sapporo offers travelers an entirely new way to experience Japan in the winter from fresh powder for world-class skiing to a rich culinary scene with must-try dishes like Sapporo ramen and Hokkaido seafood,” United said in a news release. “The city is also home to the iconic Sapporo Snow Festival, where it transforms into a winter wonderland.”

United expects to use the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for the flights. Beyond Sapporo, the airline is also adding a nonstop route between Chicago and Tokyo-Narita.

“Whether customers are dreaming of skiing in Sapporo, planning a business trip to Tokyo with some exploration added in, or an even bigger adventure across Asia, United gives travelers more ways to get there than any U.S. airline,” said Patrick Quayle, a senior vice president with United, in the release.
