Decorated United States alpine skier Lindsey Vonn’s 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics ended in tragedy.
The 41-year-old came out of retirement in 2024 with the objective of competing in her fifth Winter Games. Vonn achieved that lofty goal, joining the Team USA contingent for the highly anticipated 2026 Olympics.
Unfortunately for Vonn, she crashed in the downhill final. She sustained a major injury that ruled her out for the remainder of the Olympics. The four-time World Cup champion had to undergo multiple rounds of surgery — both in Italy and upon returning to the U.S. — to address the fractured tibia in her left leg.
Vonn shared some unfortunate personal news once she got back to home soil. The Saint Paul, Minnesota native revealed that her pet dog, Leo, died on the same day of her crash in the Olympics.
Vonn was not by her loyal companion’s side when Leo died, which made it even more difficult for the champion ski racer. Vonn was devastated to share the news on social media, where she drew a lot of support from fans and friends alike.
On Tuesday, Vonn was back on Instagram to share an update on Leo. She posted a photo of a special keepsake to commemorate her precious pooch. The picture includes a wooden box with the name “Leo” engraved on it. Behind the box is a circular display piece that features Leo’s paw print impression.
Vonn added a caption to her post. “My big boy is finally home ❤️❤️” she wrote.
As for her injury, Vonn is still recovering from her latest round of surgery. On Sunday, the three-time Olympic medalist shared on Instagram that she is “focused now on therapy and getting healthy.”
Vonn also said that she now plans to “take some time for myself” after what has been a very difficult past few weeks.
