Olympic freestyle skiing superstar Eileen Gu, one of the most decorated athletes at the 2026 Winter Olympics, has become the center of a heated political debate in the United States. After her standout performance for China in Milan-Cortina 2026, including multiple medals that further cemented her legacy, a U.S. Congresswoman publicly criticized Gu, accusing her of disrespecting the United States by choosing to represent another country on sport’s biggest stage.
Shortly after Gu’s success at Milan-Cortina, Republican Congresswoman Lisa McClain publicly criticized her at a press conference, accusing the Olympian of being ungrateful and of lacking respect for the United States, despite being born and trained there in part.
McClain leaned heavily into this comparison, contrasting Gu’s decision with the U.S. men’s hockey team, which won Olympic gold representing America:
“Pair in contrast to some of those athletes, and I won’t even dignify them by giving them a name, that train in America, that live in America, that were born in America, who have enjoyed the freedoms that America has given them, and then they don’t even have the respect for the country in which has given them so much to represent that country. I wonder why. I can think of about 20 million reasons why.”

Eileen Gu has been relatively unfazed by the criticism and has publicly defended her decision to represent China.
Earlier in the Games, when Vice President Vance made similar remarks, Gu responded with a light-hearted yet pointed reply: “I’m flattered. Thanks, JD! That’s sweet.” She argued that much of the criticism is rooted in political sentiment — not in her personal choice or Olympic spirit — and emphasized her pride in both of her heritages.
Eileen Feng Gu, born in San Francisco, California, is a Chinese-American freestyle skier who has become one of the most successful athletes in her sport. She rose to global prominence after winning multiple medals for China at the 2022 Winter Olympics and continued her dominance with three medals at the 2026 Winter Games. As of Milan-Cortina, she holds the record for the most Olympic medals in freestyle skiing history.
Gu’s background is inherently international:
Eileen Gu is one of the most decorated and influential Winter Olympians of her generation. Her performances at both Beijing 2022 and Milan-Cortina 2026 have redefined freestyle skiing, and her personal journey reflects broader cultural and sporting shifts in the 21st century.
The criticism from U.S. political leaders, such as Congresswoman McClain, highlights the ongoing debate over national representation in sport.
