The high glacial summer slopes of Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia have played host to the world's best freeskiers and snowboarders for decades, but that time has unfortunately come to an end.
As covered by POWDER's Ian Greenwood back in March of 2025, Momentum Camps, Whistler Blackcomb's long-running summer snow camp, made the announcement that summer ski camps would be cancelled at the mountain indefinitely.
Today, May 21, 2025, POWDER has received an explanation directly from Whistler Blackcomb about the decision to cancel summer ski and ride camps:
"Whistler Blackcomb is unable to continue hosting summer camps on the Horstman Glacier for the foreseeable future. This decision was not made lightly – we know these camps, and this experience, have a long history at our resort. Unfortunately, the summer conditions on the glacier related to snowpack and glacier melt prevent the safe operation of summer camps."
There it is. The death knell for one of skiing and snowboarding's greatest institutions. Countless world-class and Olympic-level athletes have traveled to Whistler Blackcomb to train on summer snow, but that tradition will be no more.

While the end of summer skiing at Whistler Blackcomb is disappointing, Momentum Camps simply moved the party to May. This season's Momentum Camps occurred between May 4th and May 18th, 2025.
Despite the end of summer skiing, Momentum seems poised to continue offering adult and kids camps in the month of May at Whistler Blackcomb. The organization also isn't ruling out a different summer ski option at Whistler, but the details about this proposal are scarce. The long statement about Momentum Camps' plan moving forward has been included below:
"It is with great sadness that we must share the difficult news that Whistler Blackcomb has now decided they can not run operations on the Horstman Glacier for the foreseeable future due to the ongoing effects of glacial recession on snowpack and lift access.
Looking beyond this season, Momentum Camps remains committed to pursuing a future for summer ski and snowboard training in Whistler. We have been actively working with Whistler Blackcomb to explore options that could allow for future operations. While this is still in the exploratory phase, we are optimistic about the potential for creating a long-term solution and will keep you updated as discussions progress.
Thank you for being part of our camp community—we hope to see you in May and, in the future, on a revitalized summer training venue!"
I first visited Whistler in July of 2008. It was just a year and a half before the 2010 Winter Olympics were scheduled to take place, and I couldn't believe my eyes as folks were walking around The Whistler Village with ski boots clacking and skis slung over their shoulders.
As a naïve east coast suburb kid, I had no idea summer skiing was a thing, let alone possible somewhere as close as Canada. The memory has been seared into my brain as one of the foundational moments for my deep love of the sport of skiing.
While I never got a chance to sample the Horstman Glacier myself, I sincerely hope that summer skiing is able to return to Whistler Blackcomb in the near future. There will surely be other summer travelers whose minds will be equally blown should it return.
For their sake, and for the countless athletes that have benefitted from summer skiing at Whistler Blackcomb in the past, here's hoping this summer's announcement about an "indefinite" closure comes to a premature end.
