And they’re off!

Last night, as cold temperatures arrived in Colorado’s mountains, Arapahoe Basin and Keystone Resort began snowmaking before the start of the 2025-26 season.

At Arapahoe Basin, the snow guns turned on at around 8:30 p.m. and continued firing through Monday morning, October 13, 2025.

According to the resort’s communications manager, Shayna Silverman, this is on track with past snowmaking seasons. “We typically try to kick it into high gear around mid-October,” she wrote in an email.

Silverman added that snowmaking relies on cooperative wet bulb temperatures.

This measurement accounts for ambient temperature and humidity. For the snow guns to produce good results, the wet bulb temperature can't be above 26 degrees. Even better results happen when the wet bulb temperature falls to between 10 and 17 degrees.

“We're looking for cold, dry air to get a lower wet bulb temperature and produce better quality flakes—which were exactly the conditions we saw last night and through the morning,” Silverman wrote.

Keystone’s snowmaking push looked similarly encouraging for skiers.

Which Colorado Ski Resorts Will Open First?

While Keystone and Arapahoe Basin haven’t yet announced their opening dates, both ski resorts are known for being among the first in North America to offer skiing and snowboarding. Last year, they opened on November 2, 2024.

Keystone and Arapahoe Basin aren’t the only ski resorts in Colorado to watch, though.

Wolf Creek Ski Area opened in 2024 on October 22, becoming the first mountain in North America to offer lift-served skiing that year. Loveland Ski Area and Winter Park could get the season started in the near future, as well, with the latter hoping to open as soon as possible. Copper Mountain started snowmaking earlier this month and is scheduled to open on November 7.

Similar to last season, Keystone aims to open with 2-plus miles of skiing and riding on the Schoolmarm and Silver Spoon trails.

If you haven’t tuned your skis already, now might be a good time to do so.
