Beartooth Basin, Wyoming, has confirmed that after a season hiatus, it plans to open in a few short days on May 28, 2025, weather permitting.
The Beartooth Highway, which must be cleared before the ski area can start spinning its lifts, was scheduled to open Friday morning.
“We need a few days to set up, do some training,” said one of the ski area’s co-owners, Austin Hart, in a social media post. “I’ll keep you updated as best I can.”
Beartooth Basin had initially advertise that it would open on Memorial Day, May 26, 2025 on its website. The May 28th opening has now been scheduled to give the ski area enough time to prepare for guests. See below.

Last year, the ski area didn’t open due to a lack of snowfall, so locals—and those planning a road trip to Beartooth Basin—are presumably stoked to ski again in May, June, and perhaps July. The ski area’s current schedule includes a closing date of July 6. The lifts are scheduled to spin from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
When compared to major ski resorts, lift tickets and season passes to Beartooth Basin are quite affordable, clocking in at $50 and $395, respectively.
Established in the 1960s, Beartooth Basin is unique in that it is a summer-specific ski area. Other destinations, like Mammoth Mountain, California, and Timberline Lodge, Oregon, have summer operations, but they also serve skiers and snowboarders during the winter.
The experience at Beartooth Basin is famously no-frills. It has two high-speed platter lifts and no base lodge or warming hut facilities. “You could call it backcountry skiing with a lift,” the ski area’s website notes.
But Beartooth Basin’s access to 600 acres of skiable terrain, much of it studded with cliffs and cornice drops, has elevated the ski area’s standing amongst diehard skiers and made it a must-visit summer snow sports mecca.
Last summer, news broke that Beartooth Basin was up for sale, and a tab on the ski area’s website indicates that the ski area is still on the market.
“We will continue to operate the business until we find the right group that shares our vision for independent community-based ski operations,” the tab reads.
