During a ski day at Fernie Alpine Resort, British Columbia, YouTuber and skier James Pavelick encountered something he'd never seen on the slopes before: a chute covered in old car tires.
"Well, this is weird," Pavelick remarks when he sees the tires. "Is this for your skis, maybe?"
It is, indeed, for your skis.
The chute Pavelick side steps down is called Corner Pocket. Fernie's patrol team installed the car tires several years ago to cover rocks that were often exposed by high winds. The rope is available to help skiers feel more comfortable while stepping down.
Although, not every skier opts for the side-step approach. Some local senders straight line down the tires, tossing caution into the wind.
However you tackle Corner Pocket, the thrills are often worth it. The chute deposits skiers at the top of Lizard Bowl, which fills in with powder after large storms. Corner Pocket is the highest marked entrance into Lizard Bowl, so it's a safe run to bet on for some fresh turns—provided you get there before anyone else.
