Nostalgia is one hell of a drug, and the folks over at Makia have enlisted it in the latest product drop: a collaboration with Forum Snowboards.
Makia is a Finnish streetwear brand that was started back in 2001 by riders Joni Malmi, Jussi Oksanen, and industry aficionado Ivar Fougstedt. Now, it’s linked back up with Peter Line and the Forum folks to drop a new collab series.
In a promotional video, Malmi talks about how his local bookstore only carried TransWorld Snowboarding, and how eventually, one of the heroes who he read about in those pages – Line – called him and asked to join the Forum team. That helped sparked Makia’s creation.
“Getting to witness firsthand how people in the States were starting their own brands out of their garages,” Malmi says. “Now, quarter of a century later, it feels incredible to say that Makia is still here alive and well. And I’m stoked to see that Peter has revived Forum to where it should be: rider owned and operated.”
There are eighteen products in the drop, including hats, t-shirts, fleece jackets, and hooded sweatshirts. The collection is for sale both on Makia and Forum’s website. If you live in the U.S., head to Forum’s site for more affordable pricing and shipping options.
“For us, the Makia x Forum collection is a sort of homecoming. It’s a way of paying tribute to one of the most influential snowboard brands out there – and also a celebration of the times that inspired Joni to found Makia,” an Instagram post from Makia says. “Of course, it’s also about old friends getting back together for a shared passion project.”
Forum as started by Line and the Four Star Distribution company, and had one of the most legendary teams of all time. JP Walker, Jeremy Jones, Malmi, Wille Yli-Luoma, Bjorn Leines, Devun Walsh, Chris Dufficy, and Line made up the “Forum Eight.”
The brand was more than a board company; it was a movement. But in 2004, Fourstar Distribution sold the brand to Burton after experiencing some financial problems. Burton bought it to prevent a ski company from doing so, but those in charge eventually felt like the brand was stretched too thin, and they ceased production of Forum boards in 2012.
It was revived in 2022 by Line.
