The snow is flying in Tahoe.
Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, a ski resort that sits on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, has started snowmaking, teased an opening day announcement in an Instagram post on Wednesday. The Reno Gazette has already reported that their opening day is slated for November 8.
“This week has given us an ideal window for snowmaking, with even more snow expected this weekend thanks to some help from Mother Nature!” the post said. “The colder temperatures have kept our snowmaking crews busy, producing ‘whales’ at each snow gun. These massive snow piles will soon be spread out to help get that crucial early season base.”
Mt. Rose is just a 25 minute drive from Reno, and has a base elevation of 8,260 feet, making it an early target for early-season opening.
Between 1-2 inches of snow is expected this weekend on the mountain, according to Open Snow.
“We are in the ‘full tilt’ mode, meaning all efforts to get us closer to opening are underway,” marketing director Mike Pierce said to the Reno Gazette Journal.
It’s not unusual for Mt. Rose to be among the first resorts in the country to open. Snowboarding YouTuber Casey Willax opened his season up there as early as October 27 in 2019.
November is the month that a good number of Tahoe ski areas start spinning the lifts. Northstar in Truckee is projected to open on November 22, as well as Heavenly Resort. Palisades is projecting a November 27 opening day, while Kirkwood won’t open until December 6.
Snowmaking began at Mt. Rose on October 19. The ski area hosted a premiere of Teton Gravity Research’s latest film Beyond the Fantasy earlier in October. The winter sports season was nearly in jeopardy after wildfires hit the region over the summer.
