The newest ski area in North Carolina is now getting a mountain bike park.
The announcement is the latest step in transforming an aging ski area into a luxury, year-round resort just 35 minutes outside of Asheville. Hatley Pointe was taken over by Deb Hatley and her family in 2023. The 2024-2025 season was its first winter in operation. It was previously known as Wolf Ridge Ski Resort.
The park will be open in spring 2026, if everything goes according to plan.
"From the moment we purchased the resort, we knew this place had the potential to be more than just a winter destination," says Hatley. "There’s something special about this mountain, and we want people to experience it in every season."
The team linked with Peter Mills and the company Elevated Trail Design to bring a bike park to the 700-feet of vertical drop. The mountain will have nine trails. Riders can expect road gaps, rock spines, wooden drops, and a cannon. The trails will challenge experienced riders while allowing beginners to progress.
"Peter reached out not long after we announced the purchase,” Hatley said in the release. “He’s from the area and knows this terrain better than anyone. His team is incredibly skilled, and they share our values of honoring the land and building something sustainable."
The bike park will be lift accessed.
Hatley Pointe dropped its ropes for the first time on December 21, 2024. The family began a construction process that was met with several bumps in the road after it took over the ski area in March 2023. While it was originally expected to open to the public in January 2024, the Hatley’s found that they needed to upgrade the snowmaking equipment, replace chairlifts, and gut its lodge.
Even though the resort didn’t open up to the general public for the 2023-2024 season, it celebrated its upgrades at the end of that season by inviting The Recess Team, (a Boone-based board shop) to come test out a makeshift park setup. Team riders like Brantley and JK Mullins, Jacob Davis, and Henry Cuthbert got a private session with shop owner JP Pardy, and the content that came out of it looked promising.
Hatley Pointe was on the Indy Pass this past season, and will remain on it for the upcoming season. So is nearby Cataloochee Ski Area, located about 70 miles away.
