It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, especially if that neighborhood is in Alaska.
Alyeska Resort, which is located roughly 42 miles outside of Anchorage, has surpassed the 700” mark for season snowfall total. As of April 15, 2025 the summit has 197” of snow, while the middle has 101” and the base has 8”.
“Bluebird days, buttery groomers, and hidden powder pockets – this is what spring skiing dreams are made of,” the snow report says.
All eight lifts are in operation, and 47 trails are open, while 38 of them are groomed.
Alyeska has received more than 96” of snow at the top of the Glacier Bowl Express in just the last eight days alone.
The resort will have its closing weekend form April 25-27, 2025. The weekend is circus themed, and the 19 inches of snow that’s forecast for this upcoming weekend will surely add to that vivbe.
There will be a costume contest, a tug-of-war, Dummy Downhill, and an idiot swim, which requires participants to jump in the pool used for the Slush Cup.
It’s been a fun season at. Alyeska, and not just because of the snow totals, though that never hurts.
For Valentine’s Day, the resort held a Lifts for Love speed dating event. More than 90 singles hopped on a chairlift with a potential new lift partner for a six-minute ride (or 14 if the riders wanted to go all the way to the top) in this alternative to Hinge and Bumble.
Of course, the heavy snowfall brought fun, but chaos followed as well. The resort was forced to suspend operations in January after a power outage. Intense winds and extreme weather led to the resort ceasing all operations for the day. The National Weather Service reported winds that reached 100 mph on the Turnagain Arm.
It’s not atypical for Alyeska to get pummeled with snow. Last year, the resort saw 500” of snowfall by February 20, 2024.
The incoming snow storms will be good, according to Powderchasers, because it will help the snowpack stay refreshed. There will be cold enough temperatures to preserve already-existing stashes of snow. Heavier periods of snow, however, will create variable conditions, which could mean avalanche risk.
Temperatures are forecasted to hit the low and mid-40s, and that could bring some rain showers if the precipitation lines up. There is a chance of either rain or snow for 13 of the next 14 days, according to Weather.com
