What’s the right number of BOAs on a snowboard boot? Is it one? Is it two?
Is it, dare I say, three?
The folks over at Burton, with the help of team rider Mark Sollers, have decided that three BOAs is part of the future. The Waverange X Pro Step On snowboard boots were released in limited supply to the public on February 13, 2025, and they include features never seen in a Burton boot before.
Sollers has worked with BOA and Burton over the last eight years to innovate and improve new boot technology, he said in a promotional video. The Waverange X Pro does not exist in a vacuum: other Burton boots will include similar technology going forward.
“This is a snowboard boot, and at first glance, it looks like a regular snowboard boot. But maybe you noticed the third BOA dial, and that’s great, because that’s really where our conversation starts today,” Sollers said in a YouTube video.
The Waverange X Pro is designed to promote a surfy ride and a fluid rang of motion, the website says. The boot includes a three-zone system that allows a rider to adjust the upper boot, lower boot, and ankle zone independently of each other. The boot also features a Vibram reinforced sole, a heat moldable liner, and its Step On technology. There are regular width and width widths available for purchase.
“The three-zone system offers a new level of control for dialing in the fit to match the boot's high-performance feel,” the product description on the website says. “An Ultralon foam liner with an asymmetric wrap creates a clean interface with the front of the boot.”
The Waverange X Pro also features an inner cuff design called an ankle hammock that holds the heel into a pocket, and uses an external BOA to adjust the fit. Burton included sleeping bag reflective foil to provide extra warmth and comfortability in really cold conditions, and its DRYRIDE heat cycle lining is said to manage sweat and retain body heat for more warmth.
The boot will be included in Burton’s Fall 2025 releases, but is available for those who act fast now. The Burton website already was sold out of eight of the sizes in the men’s boot.
This boot is advertised as a happy medium between soft and playful and stiff and aggressive. The extreme customization that it offers will likely offer riders a more responsive experience on their board, without forcing the user to use a stiffer boot than they’re comfortable using.
