Only one snowboarder will be named to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame this year, but his impact on the culture expands past what he did while strapped in.

Todd Richards is one of the eight inductees for the Class of 2025. He will be honored at an announcement party in Ogden, Utah on September 23, 2025, and inducted during a ceremony on April 11, 2026 in Park City, Utah at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard USANA Center of Excellence.

Richards was a pioneer of the halfpipe in the early days of the event. He brought skateboarding style to a culture that had its sights set on alpine racing events at the time, at least on the east coast.

He won U.S. Open halfpipe titles in 1994 and 1997, and two Winter X Games halfpipe titles. That includes a gold medal at the first ever Winter X Games in 1997. Richards won two medals at the 2000 Winter X Games, and then won the silver medal in both big air and slopestyle in 2001. Richards also competed in halfpipe at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, where he finished in 16th place.

His impact on snowboarding can be felt at most modern contests.

He’s provided Emmy-winning commentary for every Winter Olympics since 2006, and has served as an announcer for Red Bull’s Heavy Metal street contest. He’s also the face of the reboot of Morrow Snowboards.

“His dedication to progression in riding, equipment innovation, style, and cultural preservation remains unparalleled,” his biography page from the story in Ski Area Management Magazine says.

If that résumé doesn’t impress enough, he also had an appearance in the 2001 cult classic film Out Cold, alongside a star-studded cast that included Zach Galifianakis, David Denman, and David Koechner. He released a book titled P3: Pipes, Parks and Powder in 2003, and is the subject of the 2009 documentary Me, Myself, and I.

Resort designer Chris Cushing, marketing guru Raelene Davis, Paralympic skier Nancy Gustafson, industry professional and ski racing advocate Hugh Harley, adaptive skier Doug Pringle, cross-country skier Kikkan Randall, and ski jumper Lindsey Van will be inducted alongside Richards.

Richards posted a sentimental reflection on his Instagram page on September 16, 2025.

“I feel like it’s weird to really love an activity as much as you did when you are 19 as you do when you’re 55... I can absolutely say that I love snowboarding as much now as I did then,” he said. “There for sure were some years in the middle where I lost the full spark, but it’s 100% back now.”
