Type-2 fun lovers of Colorado, break out your splitboard. Uphill access is open at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.
Riders looking to earn their turns will be able to at the Summit County Ski Area from now until the end of the season, unless conditions lead the resort to say otherwise.
Uphill access is available before and after lift hours. That means either before 8:30 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Until more terrain opens up, skinners are able to summit at the top of the Black Mountain Express lift. That will change as more terrain opens up.
To reach the summit, uphill riders should use Dercum’s Gulch or Grizzly Road.
Anyone looking to earn those turns will need an uphill pass, of some sort. A-Basin offers an uphill season pass for $109, and those who already hold an A-Basin full season pass can add it on for $29. $10 from the sale of each pass will be donated to the National Forest Foundation. And of course, you cannot access the chairlifts by purchasing an uphill pass.
Uphill passes must be picked up in person during operating hours. Of course, this can be tricky for someone trying to get those turns in before the mountain fully opens up. Those apart of the dawn patrol looking to get a dark start before the guest services office opens up should carry a copy of their confirmation receipt while skinning.

The staff in Summit County typically aim for the longest season in Colorado. Uphill access at ski areas has exploded since the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020. In Colorado, just three mountains - Purgatory, Silverton, and Echo Mountain – do not allow uphill access in some capacity. That’s according to the United States Ski Mountaineering website.
The phenomenon is so widespread, even the Colorado tourism website has published a guide to going uphill.
“Yes — in spite of the elaborate engineering and advanced equipment that’s gotten us to the summit with minimal effort for 80 years, there are folks out there who legitimately want to earn their turns,” the article says. “Intrigued? Here’s the what, why and where.”

Dolphins quickly become NFL's most hopeless situation
There are a lot of teams in the NFL that are already out of the playoff race this season and facing long roads back to contention. There might not be a single franchise that is facing a grimmer, bleaker situation than the Miami Dolphins. The franchise has not won a playoff game in 26 years, the longest ongoing drought in the NFL, and it is going to continue this season. They have mostly been mediocre in recent years only qualified for the playoffs just four times in the past 23 years. They have had no recent success, are having no current success, and do not seem likely to have success anytime soon in the future. Whatever momentum and shine they may have had from last week's big win over the Atlanta Falcons was completely erased on Thursday night in an embarrassing performance against the Baltimore Ravens in a 28-6 defeat. There were zero positives to take away from it, and it is hard to see where a quick fix comes from. The Ravens beat the Dolphins, and the Dolphins beat themselves Coming out of halftime on Thursday night, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said they were playing against two teams in the first half, referencing the fact they had several self-inflicted mistakes that helped cost them points, stall drives and give points to Baltimore. They had long drives on offense get bogged down by penalties, forcing them to settle for field goal attempts. They fumbled deep in their own territory to set the Ravens up for their first touchdown of the game, and then turned the ball over two other times later in the game. That is a losing recipe against almost any team in football, and especially against a team that is quarterbacked by Lamar Jackson. But that's only part of the problem for Miami, and it's largely only related to this game. The big picture problem is far more concerning. Tua Tagovailoa is not the answer Tagovailoa is far from the only problem in Miami right now. It's just not a good roster overall. But he also does not seem to be part of the solution, especially with a $53M salary cap number. The Dolphins are paying him like one of the NFL's elite quarterbacks — and one of its elite players — and they are not getting anything close to that level of play. He threw his league-leading 11th interception of the season on Thursday, and just looked like a quarterback that had no answers for anything. He lacks elite arm strength, and everything regarding the Dolphins offense is built around timing, their ability for the first read of their offense to get open, and his ability to hit it. When things do not work perfectly, the offense has zero chance to function. It has not worked. Tagovailoa's regression as a quarterback, combined with a gigantic contract that might quickly becoming one of the NFL's biggest albatross deals, is a big reason why this situation feels so grim. It is one thing to not have a quarterback. It is another thing entirely to invest in the wrong quarterback and be stuck with them and have almost no way out from it. Eventually head coach Mike McDaniel and probably general manager Chris Grier are going to be dismissed, and it will not be unfair given the roster and team they have built. Whoever comes in to replace them is going to have a mostly bare cupboard to restock with one of the NFL's worst contracts at its most important position. At least if you are the New York Jets or New Orleans Saints you can start over this offseason with a new quarterback. It seems almost impossible for the Dolphins to do that.
Latest Matt Rhule news should end Penn State rumors
The Penn State Nittany Lions can likely scratch another candidate off their coaching wish list. On Thursday, ESPN "College GameDay" insider Pete Thamel reported Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule has signed a two-year contract extension with the program, which will run through the 2032 season. It includes a $15M buyout this season, which should prevent another school from poaching him. Why Matt Rhule was considered a strong candidate to replace recently fired Penn State HC James Franklin After Penn State fired Franklin on Oct. 12, Rhule was immediately linked to the job. As a teenager, the New York native moved to State College, where he became a walk-on linebacker for the Nittany Lions from 1994-97. He clearly still loves his alma mater. "I love Penn State, met my wife there, my alma mater," Rhule told the media shortly after Franklin was fired. "Fan since I was born, I think probably had a Penn State shirt when I was born. I really love [athletic director] Pat Kraft, and I'm sad to see coach Franklin go." While the AD for the Temple Owls, Kraft gave Rhule his first head-coaching job in 2013. Now that he has signed the extension, he can't turn to his old friend again and must explore other options. Where does Penn State go from here? The list of candidates in Penn State's head-coaching search is shrinking. The Indiana Hoosiers signed HC Curt Cignetti, another potential target, to an eight-year, $11.6M contract on Oct. 16. The Nittany Lions could attempt to court Ole Miss Rebels HC Lane Kiffin, who has his team in the thick of the national championship hunt after a 7-1 start. However, if he does leave Oxford, expect him to stay in the SEC rather than flocking to the Big Ten. Some believe Kiffin may be the next HC of the LSU Tigers and Florida Gators. And for any optimistic Penn State fans thinking they can lure ESPN analyst Nick Saban out of retirement, dream on. The former Alabama Crimson Tide HC has said there's "no way" he's returning to coaching. Don't bank on Penn State (3-4) promoting interim HC Terry Smith, especially after losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 25-24, in his first game. Instead, it may target HCs Mike Elko (Texas A M Aggies), Clark Lea (Vanderbilt Commodores) and Jeff Brohm (Louisville Cardinals). Penn State alumni may have welcomed a homecoming for Rhule. Now, it no longer looks like a possibility.

Jordan Love and the Packers will be looking to continue their 3 game winning streak facing off against a returning Bryce Young and the Panthers. Today we will dive into this game and look at the key matchups in Green Bay vs Carolina. Packers Rush Defense vs Dowdle/Hubbard The first of our key matchups in Green Bay vs Carolina is the Packers rush defense going against the Panthers rushing attack of Rico Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard. It sounds as if the Carolina Panthers will give the heavy load to Dowdle with Hubbard rotating in. It will not be an easy task going against the 3rd best run defense in the NFL for the Panthers. However the same could be said for this Green Bay defense as they are facing the 5th best rushing attack in the NFL at 136 yards per game. Dowdle ranks 7th in the NFL with 605 yards, an average of 5.7 yards per carry without the full workload this season. The Packers will need to slow down this rushing duo and force a returning Bryce Young to pass the ball. If Green Bay can succeed at stopping the run, Carolina could be in for a tough offensive day. Packers Pass Rush vs Panthers Offensive Line Second of our key matchups in Green Bay vs Carolina is the Packers pass rush vs the Panthers offensive line. The Packers have the best pass rushing duo in the NFL when it comes to bringing down the quarterback. Rashan Gary is fifth in the NFL with 7.5 sacks and Micah Parsons is right on his back with 6.5. On the Carolina side, their offensive line has been average this season but has also been dealing with some injuries. They rank 15th in the NFL with 19 sacks allowed. Bryce Young has been sacked 11 times, and last week Andy Dalton was sacked seven times. This stout Green Bay defensive pass rush could have another big day sacking the quarterback. Hopefully Jeff Hafley fairs much better than his predecessor did when facing Bryce Young a couple of seasons ago. Green Bay Rushing Attack vs Carolina Defense Last of our key matchups in Green Bay vs Carolina is the Packers rushing attack vs the Carolina Panthers Defense. Last week the Packers rushing attack struggled against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It wasn’t working until Emanuel Wilson came in and gave that change of pace style that sparked the Packers 2nd half offense. Green Bay will need more from a banged up Josh Jacobs, while some have suggested letting Jacobs rest this game and start Wilson. With Jacobs being the team leader he is I don’t see that happening. If the Packers were smart they would continue the rotation of Wilson and Jacobs until the latter is fully healthy. This duo will need to keep the Panthers defense on their tails to allow Quarterback Jordan Love to keep up his strong start to 2025. This Sunday against the Detroit Lions is going to be huge when it comes to setting the expectations for the rest of the season. A loss will make a run toward the playoffs significantly less likely for the Vikings, and it could impact how they approach the trade deadline. The conventional wisdom would be that the Vikings wouldn't make a move to add at the trade deadline due to their record, especially when you look at the majority of players being acquired are on expiring contracts. Three years ago, the Vikings and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah made a big splash to acquire T.J. Hockenson at the deadline, and it was a big addition both for the 2022 season and beyond. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported on Friday that the Vikings are looking for a cornerback. "As for buyers, the Vikings and Colts are among a list of teams looking for corners. That market isn’t rich with options, which could make the Rams (McCreary), Browns (Tyson Campbell) and Eagles (Michael Carter II) look smart for striking a little earlier." It shouldn't be much of a surprise that the Vikings are looking for a cornerback to help them out, especially with Jeff Okudah being both ineffective and injured. They haven't shown a willingness to trust Dwight McGlothern as of yet, and finding a player at the position to fortify with Isaiah Rodgers and Byron Murphy Jr. should make a difference, especially when it comes to playing man coverage. The key here is finding a cornerback whom the Vikings can trade for. There aren't a lot of options, especially with four cornerbacks having already been traded. Two that come to mind are Riq Woolen of the Seattle Seahawks and Alontae Taylor of the New Orleans Saints. Woolen has fallen out of favor with the Seahawks over the last couple of seasons with Mike Macdonald at the helm. He is currently starting for the Seahawks, but he doesn't seem to be in their long-term plans. He would provide the necessary size and speed the Vikings need at the cornerback position. Taylor is more of a slot cornerback, which the Vikings have been hesitant to add with wanting to slide Murphy on the inside. Even so, he's a versatile piece that could end up being a huge benefit for the Vikings.
