An avalanche in Utah’s Big Cottonwood Canyon killed one person, and sent another to the hospital with significant leg injuries.

The slide happened on February 8, 2025.

Two skiers were caught in the East Bowl of Silver Fork. The skier who died was killed from trauma, the Utah Avalanche Center reported. The other was evacuated via helicopter.

Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, Utah Department of Public Safety, and Powderbird helped with the recovery and rescue.

The soft slab avalanche was 2’ deep and 150’ wide.

On the same day, another slide near Park City Mountain’s 9990 caught three skiers, though none of them were injured. One of them was buried, and the other two quickly dug them out, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office told the Park Record. The two avalanches came after nearly a foot of wet and heavy snowfall.
