Manchester United return to action knowing that the midweek game against Wolves carries real weight in their season, with three points offering a chance to strengthen their league position and maintain momentum after a mixed run of results.

Their strong recent record against Wolves provides some confidence heading into the fixture.

United approach the game sitting firmly in the European conversation, aware that victories in matches like this are crucial if they are to stay within touching distance of the top places.

However, Ruben Amorim’s preparations have once again been shaped by injuries, with the United head coach set to be without several key figures for the visit of Wolves.

Bruno Fernandes, who had remarkably missed only two games through injury across his United career before being forced off in the recent defeat to Aston Villa, will not feature despite his desire to return quickly.

“No chance he is going to play against Wolves, no chance,” Amorim smiled. “You can write that.”

United’s squad issues do not stop there, as Amorim continues to monitor Mason Mount after he was withdrawn at half-time on Friday as a precaution.

“I don’t know how Mase is going to be for that game,” Amorim admitted.

Defensive options remain severely limited, with Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire both unavailable, while Kobbie Mainoo is also expected to miss out.

“I think Kobbie Mainoo is not going to be ready. Bruno is not going to be ready. I think Matt is not going to be ready. Harry is not going to be ready,” Amorim said. “So, I think we are not going to have more players.”

Looking slightly further ahead to Sunday’s trip to Leeds, Amorim offered little optimism over a swift turnaround for his injured players.

“Bruno was already saying that he needs to train, but we don’t know,” he added. “Kobbie Mainoo is going to start on the pitch also, so we will see. Matthijs is struggling a little bit. Harry the same thing, so I don’t expect to have the players for this game, for the other game, I don’t know.”

Wolves, meanwhile, are facing problems of their own, particularly in midfield and defence.

With injuries to Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Marshall Munetsi leaving them short in the centre of the pitch, while João Gomes is also unavailable.

At the back, injuries to Toti Gomes and Emmanuel Agbadou’s AFCON involvement have further reduced their options, and Andre’s suspension after picking up a fifth yellow card has compounded their selection issues ahead of Tuesday’s clash.

With both sides stretched thin, the match shapes up as a test of depth and adaptability as United look to take another step forward despite mounting absences.
