Tottenham Hotspur have been looking outwards as the chiefs at Hotspur Way go on a hunt for a new head coach after the Lilywhites recently relieved Thomas Frank of his duties. And by the looks of it, one possible early candidate has already drawn a line.

The North Londoners came out with a loss against Newcastle United on Tuesday in what was a 2-1 defeat which propelled Tottenham a step further into the relegation battle at 16th. And with the North London derby around the corner, it looks like Tottenham are working on an aggressive timeline, with Monday regarded as the due date to have a man in place on the touchline.

But in what comes as a blow to Tottenham, one who was a reported option now appears unlikely to take over the reins, at least in the short term.

122-goal Former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane has been loosely linked with a return to N17 after the former Brentford manager departed. But he is currently in job at Ferencvárosi TC, where he is enjoying a splendid time, as they sit at the top of the Hungarian league after having recently secured a place in the Europa League play-offs.

But according to a recent report by Matt Law of The Telegraph, Keane would not be willing to take the Tottenham job if it came only on an interim basis, and he would only consider taking leave from Ferencváros only if a permanent managerial role came to his table. And that is a stance which complicates matters at Tottenham.

Given that one of the possibilities that Tottenham are exploring is to have a caretaker until the end of the season and then go on to make a longer-term appointment when summer comes around. This is quite in view with how Mauricio Pochettino can possibly join Tottenham after his job with the US national team, with whom he is prepping to host the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

After crashing out of the FA Cup to Aston Villa, Tottenham will directly play next weekend when they face Arsenal on 22nd February, and they would want to avoid any sense of uncertainty given that the Gunners game is in sight and then the pivotal run of fixtures after it.
