Manchester United are ready to battle Manchester City and Chelsea to sign Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic as Andre Onana’s replacement. Man United have run out of patience for Onana as he continued to make unforced errors as a first-choice goalkeeper.
The 29-year-old joined the Red Devils under Erik ten Hag to replace the legendary David De Gea at the club. However, Onana has failed to live up to the big expectations that come with United due to their past keepers’ legacies.
Man United had legends like Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, who set the standards for future goalkeepers. De Gea met those standards, despite the club’s downfall after Sir Alex Ferguson retired as the manager of the club.
Onana failed to meet those standards and persistently found himself in the middle of the spotlight for the wrong reasons. From failing to stop “saveable” shots to making casual mistakes, the Cameroon international has cost many games for Man United.
As the Red Devils head into the new era under Ruben Amorim, the goalkeeping position is once again under assessment. While United have to use its limited finances to make numerous changes, some have argued that goalkeeping is a priority.
According to Italian publication Tutto Mercato, United want Milinkovic-Savic from Torino amid interest from Chelsea and City for the Serbian. The 28-year-old has a release clause worth €20 million (£16.9m), making him very affordable compared to other available goalkeeping options.
While Torino are currently 11th in the Serie A table, Milinkovic-Savic has performed well despite lacking a reliable defensive cover. Milinkovic-Savic has made 36 appearances for Torino in all competitions this season, conceding 39 goals and maintaining 11 clean sheets.
The price tag of the Serbian international could help United secure the deal as it holds a lower risk. Milinkovic-Savic could potentially compete for Onana for the starting role for Amorim to have a short-term solution while focusing on other positions.
