Manchester United have had one of the most talented academies in Europe at the moment. Ruben Amorim has been looking to create that pathway from Carrington to the first team and that is where another name is climbing through the ranks and into the spotlight in 16-year-old defender Jayden Ngwashi.
The Manchester Reds starlet has been training with the first team in the past week. (h/t Nathan Salt) This would be his first involvement with the senior side, as he was seen working alongside senior defenders at Carrington this week. And given that he was present in the final training session ahead of this weekend’s Premier League game and this in itself is a strong message that Amorim is watching.
This also shows how the decision-makers behind the scenes are aware of the growing interest in the teenager.
The left-footed centre-back penned down a new deal at M16 earlier this year, putting an end to interest from multiple clubs from abroad. And his involvements with the senior side show how the club is looking to test his mettle against the best in the roster at Carrington.
There also has been a lot of criticism around the fact that United have not been making the most out of their academy. Given the current track record of players coming through from the academy into the first team, there needs to be something done about it. And trusting a teenager to find his stride shows how the club is committed to having more academy players donning that badge for the first team.
While it would not come next week, it ends up starting a process which can not only reap dividends in the long term but also attract more younger players at Carrington.
We have already seen the likes of Amir Ibragimov, Tyler Fletcher and Shea Lacey pushing for a possible inclusion around the first team. And now Ngwashi adds to that growing list of young players who have the potential to see minutes for the first team in the coming months.
There have been a lot said around Ngwashi indicating his potential to be a long-term asset at M16. And pushing him onto the first team training is not just about short-term needs. It shows more of a strategy to try and develop him around the physical ask of the English top tier by senior exposure. It shows that United are already laying the groundwork.
