Stewart Downing feels Ollie Watkins could be Manchester United bound this summer

Last season was nothing less than a nightmare for Manchester United. The team finished 15th in the Premier League, lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final and were eliminated from European competitions. In such a situation, the most important question of the summer transfer window was which striker would ultimately take charge of the team.

This summer, Benjamin Sesko moved to Old Trafford for £74m, and this deal is considered very important for United. The 22-year-old Slovenian striker rejected Newcastle United and chose Amorim’s team, and it is believed that he will make his debut against Arsenal in the very first match of the season. Amorim took this decision in view of the failure of Rasmus Hojlund, because this Danish forward, who came for £72m, completely failed to live up to expectations in the previous season.

Meanwhile, former England international Stewart Downing said via Flashscore (h/t Metro) that United may look to bring in another striker at the last minute of the transfer window, with the name of Ollie Watkins coming up, who has also been a target of United. Downing thinks United could suddenly look much stronger if a profile like Watkins joins the squad. Watkins is a proven Premier League player, scoring regularly for Aston Villa, and his running, positioning and finishing make him a threat to any defence.

‘Who knows, Ollie Watkins could end up at United too. You never know late on, and then Man United all of a sudden become a lot better team than they are.’

From a fan’s perspective, it’s interesting to hear Watkins’ name being called after Sesko’s arrival. Sesko is young and quick but has zero Premier League experience. In contrast, Watkins has been around for several seasons and has scored under pressure in the league. That makes the discussion even more relevant.

Opinion: Is another striker really necessary?

The question now is: do United need another striker after Sesko? In our opinion, the answer is not so simple. Sesko’s arrival is certainly a big step, but given the state of the team, Amorim should not focus solely on strikers. The defence broke down repeatedly last season, the midfield lost balance, and the wingers did not provide any consistent performance. In such a situation, it would not seem wise if the club spends £50m-£60m on another striker.

Moreover, although Hojlund is linked with a move away from the club, his departure is not yet confirmed and certain. We also have Joshua Zirkzee in the squad, and even Cunha can play as a striker. So, we don’t feel United have the funds or should be making a move for the 29-year-old Englishman.

As for Watkins, if he arrives at Old Trafford in the last days of the season, the team will definitely strengthen, but at the moment, balance is more important for the club. Adding a third big name with Sesko and Hojlund in the squad could create an imbalance. Watkins is excellent, but right now, United should focus on defence and midfield, and most importantly, selling their out-of-favour players. Sesko’s performance this season will determine the direction of the team and will write the real story.
