3 Massive Dilemmas Facing England World Cup Squad Selection

England World Cup qualification campaign has gone in a great manner, as the Three Lions have qualified for the tournament, maintaining a perfect record. They have won all of their matches in a group also featuring Andorra, Serbia and Albania. However, Thomas Tuchel’s job is going to be more difficult when the finals start next year. The England World Cup squad selection process will not prove easy.

Selection Dilemmas For England World Cup Squad

The English have been facing some selection dilemmas for the tournament. The controversy over the selection of Jude Bellingham has been there, but Tuchel will probably not think of going into the tournament without the star Real Madrid midfielder. Still, England World Cup qualification campaign has thrown in a few selection-issues for him. We are going to discuss three such pairs of selection issues for him:

#3 Myles Lewis-Skelly vs. Nico O’Reilly

Both of those left-backs are very young and have a long career in front of them. Both made their England debuts this year only. Lewis-Skelly and O’Reilly will be 20 and 21, respectively, during the tournament next year.

England have gone past Kieran Trippier, who has earned 54 caps for them and played at the Euro 2024, in terms of choosing their left-back. Both the young options are pretty good, but Lewis-Skelly is slightly more experienced and probably the more skillful of the two.

However, O’Reilly has better physical attributes and might be chosen ultimately because of that. He has also broken into the Manchester City staring XI for quite a while now and probably remains the favorite to make it to the World Cup Squad, given the fact that his superior physical attributes will probably be needed in the scorching heat of the United States and Mexico. Tuchel might take the risk of including both the youngsters in his World Cup squad as well. However, Tino Livramento, another youngster, should also be in the reckoning.

#2 Phil Foden vs. Morgan Rogers

Foden has played in 47 matches for England and is one of the senior players in their current set-up. After a disastrous 2024/25 season by his high standards, Foden has improved his performance for his club this season.

After getting dropped from the Three Lions squad, he has also made a come back to it recently by virtue of his improved performance for Manchester City. On the other hand, Rogers made his debut for England last year and has earned 12 caps for them so far.

Foden is by far the more experienced and more decorated player of the two in club football, but has not impressed for his national team much, scoring only four goals in his international career so far. On his day, he is also probably the most skillful player in England with a lethal left foot. Rogers, on the other hand, has been steadily improving for Aston Villa and has played as a No. 10 for England recently.

Foden and Rogers will be competing for the central attacking midfielder’s role _ whether it is a No. 10 or a No. 8, with Bellingham and Cole Palmer also on the fray. It will be interesting to see whom Tuchel decides to take to the United States ultimately.

#1. Marcus Rashford vs. Eberechi Eze

Rashford is easily the more experienced player and is on the way to resurrecting his career with his loan move to Barcelona from Manchester United. Like Foden, Rashford has been underwhelming for England with 18 goals in 68 international caps.

Eze, meanwhile, has played in 16 matches for England and his versatility allows him to play both in the central midfield and the left flank. He will be vying for the left-winger’s spot with Rashford, with Anthony Gordon also in the reckoning. Tuchel should take any two out of Rashford, Eze and Gordon in the squad.

Should either of Rashford and Eze help their respective clubs win the league title, he should be the favorite to make it to the squad. If Gordon has a below-par season, both Rashford and Eze might be going to the United States.
