Alejandro Garnacho was fuming as he was subbed off after 65 minutes of tonight’s nasty derby game against Tottenham. The winger was replaced by Jamie Gittens in the first attacking change made by the manager.
The Argentine showed his petulant side as he gloomily stalked to the touchline and took his seat, passing Enzo Maresca without a word.
We get that players always want to play the full game. But we’re not sure why Garnacho is so upset – he is lucky to get a start given there’s a ton of competition for minutes and he’s hardly pulled up trees in his time at Chelsea so far.
You’re a winger in the Premier League in 2025. You’re very rarely going to make it to the end of a game, no matter how well you play. The only way to guarantee you’re left on the pitch for 90 minutes is to be so good that the manager can’t dream of taking you off.
So how about working on that rather than whinging that someone else is getting a go? Jamie Gittens played well in midweek and deserves 25 minutes to show what he can do. We very much doubt Enzo Maresca will like this sort of attitude either, although it was kept limited mainly to just some quiet simmering on the bench.
Reece James tried something new at half time of this game, taking his players off in a particular way to resist the pressure of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Blues are ahead in the game because of Joao Pedro’s goal, which was created by some superb play from Moises Caicedo, who won 3 challenges to get the ball into Spurs’ box.
