Real Madrid stepped onto the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia with an eagerness to qualify for the knockouts without any hiccups whatsoever, against a determined RB Salzburg.
However, Xabi Alonso faced a dilemma Carlo Ancelotti had to deal with all season — the lack of center-backs in the squad. Raul Asencio’s reckless tackle resulted in a suspension for this match, and Antonio Rudiger had just returned from injury in the last match.
Other than Dean Huijsen, the only other center-back in the squad was Jacobo Ramon. But up stepped Aurelien Tchouameni, as he had under Ancelotti throughout the season.
Even though he has made it known that playing in the backline is not his preferred position, he would do whatever the manager asked of him, as Xabi did.
The Spanish manager in the pre-match press conference had called Tchouameni “a key pillar” to his squad, which meant that there was a lot of responsibility on the Frenchman’s shoulders.
Heading into the match with a 3-man backline, Tchouameni proved how adaptable he is and can put on a masterclass regardless of the position he plays in.
The 25-year-old proved to be an absolute rock at the back for Xabi’s men. According to Sofascore statistics, he was involved in making 4 clearances, was able to block 4 shots, and also made a last-man tackle.
Having 86 touches on the ball, Tchouameni was accurate with 97% of his passes, which is Toni Kroos-esque, considering the French national played the entire match.
After the match, he emphasized the team’s eagerness to continue to improve, which should be the right spirit, considering how the fans were disappointed at the Al-Hilal draw, but then Real Madrid bounced back in style in the next two matches.
The Merengues qualified as table toppers and are now set to face a well-drilled Juventus side in the round of 16. This is the first real test for Xabi Alonso’s side, and they will be determined to pass it with flying colours.
