4 players should follow Aaron Ramsdale out of Southampton

Southampton have bounced back from their four point deduction penalty to start the campaign.

The Saints endured a tricky summer, with a lot of controversy surrounding their expulsion from the play-offs by the EFL.

But the Hampshire outfit are in the mix for a play-off place already after just the first couple months of the new campaign, despite starting with a handicap.

Tonda Eckert’s side have the same record after 14 games as the current league leaders Middlesbrough, and will have their sights set on a top two finish this year.

And the January transfer window could be an important period in their promotion battle, with incomings and outgoings expected, with Aaron Ramsdale’s departure being top of the list.

Here we look at the Southampton players that should follow the goalkeeper out of the door at St. Mary’s in the new year…

Welington

Welington joined Southampton in the 2025 January window from Sao Paulo, but has been unable to make much of an impact.

The left-back is comfortably behind Ryan Manning in the pecking order of Eckert’s side, with the Irishman proving to be a focal piece of the squad.

While it is important to have cover in the squad for the defender, Welington can’t be pleased with his lack of game time at the moment.

Whether it is a loan or a permanent move, he should be seeking an exit from St. Mary’s in the new year, as it is clear that he will never be more than a second choice at the Championship club.

Mads Roerslev

Mads Roerslev’s first season with Southampton last year was interrupted by injury issues, which led to him only playing nine times in the league through the campaign.

But since recovering to full fitness, he has yet to earn a chance under Eckert, and it’s difficult to see him breaking into the squad.

With the likes of James Bree and Zach Abbott ahead of him in the pecking order, the January window presents a good opportunity for the full-back to seek a move elsewhere.

Otherwise, it’s difficult to see him earning any game time soon, and his departure could also open up valuable space in the squad for the second half of the campaign.

Sam Edozie

Southampton rejected offers for Samuel Edozie at the end of the summer transfer window, but he hasn’t been a big part of the squad since then.

The winger has started just two of the opening 14 games of the new campaign, making a further eight appearances from the bench.

It’s clear that Eckert sees him as a secondary option, at best, for the Saints’ attack, and it would be smart for both player and club to go their separate ways in January.

The 23-year-old has found it difficult to convince Eckert of his quality, and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon either.

Princewill Ehibhatiomhan

Princewill Ehibhatiomhan spent the second half of last season on loan with Salford City, where he made 11 appearances in League Two.

It’s clear that the 21-year-old is not in Eckert’s first team plans since returning in the summer, as he has yet to receive a minute of game time at senior level, even in the EFL Cup.

Another loan move, or even a permanent departure, would make a lot of sense in the winter market.
