Argentina is one of the greatest and most successful nations in football history. The current World Cup holders can boast of some truly world class talents – but how many of them play in the Premier League?
Today, we’ll be looking at five of the best Argentinian players in the Premier League today. In the past, the league has played host to Argentine legends such as Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Javier Mascherano – who is flying the flag for La Albiceleste in modern times?
Emi Martinez often suffers from peaks and valleys in terms of his form – however, on his day, the Aston Villa man is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Martinez’s talents were on full display during the 2022 World Cup, particularly in the final, when he made a fantastic save to deny Kylian Mbappe late on. He isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but his talents cannot be denied.
Marcos Senesi is quietly becoming one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. He has had a couple of slip-ups, most notably in Bournemouth’s opening game of the season against Liverpool, but can generally be called upon to put in an industrious performance.
Not only is Senesi a great defender, he is also very technically proficient – many of the Cherries’ attacks start with him playing the ball out from the back. He brings a perfect blend of physicality and technical ability to the table, though he only has two Argentina caps to his name.
Alexis Mac Allister is another player who struggled at the beginning of the campaign, but has exonerated himself with some brilliant performances at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield.
This season hasn’t been Mac Allister’s best, but he still merits a spot on this list. A brilliant attacking central midfielder, he the complete skillset you would expect from a world-class midfielder. His best attribute is his work rate – not many players cover as much ground as he does.
A few months ago, Emi Buendia would have been nowhere near a list of this ilk – but his wonderful performances for Aston Villa have raised his stock dramatically.
Buendia has been at the heart of Villa’s excellent form over the last few games. He has scored three goals and has notched up two assists in nine Premier League games – could a surprise call-up be on the cards ahead of the summer?
Without a shadow of a doubt, Enzo Fernandez is the best Argentinian footballer in the Premier League at the time of writing. It took him a while to fit in at Chelsea, but now, he is arguably their main man amongst a litany of superstars.
A phenomenal passer of the ball, Fernandez is responsible for creating the majority of Chelsea’s attacking moves. He had a breakout year in 2022, as he impressed audiences across the globe with his performances for Argentina in the last World Cup – how will the Blues ace get on in 2026?
