As we reach the end of the season, several managers in football have seen their stock rise – or fal. Today, we’ll be ranking the five best head coaches in the world of football.

We’ve left no stone unturned – achievements in domestic competitions and the European scene will be taken into account. Who makes your top five of the best managers in football today?

Vincent Kompany

When Vincent Kompany was managing Burnley in the Championship and the Premier League, did anyone seriously expect him to be considered for a list such as this?

Many scoffed upon his ascension to the Bayern Munich job, but there is only one man laughing now – Kompany himself. Bayern are the top of the Bundesliga table by a 12-point margin and they have also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League after overcoming Real Madrid.

Kompany lacks the pedigree of some of the other coaches in this list, but give him time – he has only been in management for five and a half years at the time of writing.

Hansi Flick

A few years ago, Barcelona were a mess. Wracked by financial imbalance and departing superstars, Hansi Flick deserves a lot of credit for restoring much of the Catalonian giants’ honour.

Barcelona might be out of the Champions League, having been knocked out by Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals, but they’re still on course to win La Liga.

Previously, Flick also enjoyed plenty of success as Bayern Munich head coach, winning the Champions League, the DfB-Pokal and two Bundesliga titles.

Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola may not be the all-domineering head coach he once was during his prime years, but the Spaniard is still amongst the best managers in football today.

Despite overseeing a relatively lacklustre start to the season at Manchester City, Guardiola has steadied the ship since then. They defeated Arsenal at Wembley to win the League Cup – now, they’re putting the heat on the Gunners in a fierce Premier League title race.

Guardiola’s trophy cabinet is labyrithian in size. It would be easier to name the trophies that he hasn’t won, but we’ll try to list them all off. All in all, across stints at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City, he has won three La Liga titles, three Bundesliga titles, six Premier League titles, two Copa del Reys, two DfB-Pokals, two FA Cups, five League Cups and three Champions League trophies. And breathe!

Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta’s list of honours pales in comparison to Guardiola’s, but he has been in the management game for a much shorter amount of time – furthermore, he has arguably out-performed his former mentor in the current campaign.

Arsenal are on course to win their first Premier League title in over 20 years under the stewardship of Arteta – provided he can get them over the line with just six games remaining.

Many have criticised his ‘boring’ style of play, but we think he deserves praise fo this. He has transformed Arsenal from a stereotypical ‘soft touch’ into a hard-as-nails outfit that no one wants to come up against. Are they a little one dimensional? Maybe. Are they effective? Definitely.

Luis Enrique

For us, Luis Enrique has to occupy the top spot on this list. Not only has he been successful contemporaneously, he can also back it up with some considerable pedigree.

PSG are arguably the best team in the world right now. They’re the favourites to win the Champions League – additionally, they’re also on course to win the Ligue 1 title. Since his arrival at PSG, he has turned the Parisian giants into a genuine force to be reckoned with – they are the bridesmaids no more.

Enrique’s past achievements speak for themselves – he has won two La Liga titles, two Ligue 1 titles, three Copa del Reys, two Coupe de France trophies and two Champions Leagues. 15 years of greatness – and he still has plenty left in the tank.
