Bruno Guimaraes was a beloved figure at Newcastle United. It was always going to take an enormous fee to prize him away from their hands – even then, some Newcastle fans felt they sold him below his actual value.

All in all, Guimaraes left St. James’ Park to join Arsenal for a fee of £75 million. It’s a gargantuan sum of money, but it’s nowhere near to the most expensive transfer in the Premier League this summer.

Still, Guimaraes is a fantastic player who will bring yet more quality to Arsenal’s superlative midfield. A Brazilian international, he could be the conduit the Gunners need to reach the next level.

Mateus Fernandes

Mateus Fernandes was always going to leave West Ham United after they were relegated to the Championship at the end of last season. Nevertheless, we’re sure that their fans would have rather seen him move quite literally anywhere else other than Tottenham Hotspur.

Regardless, Spurs were out to splash the cash this summer, amid a major squad overhaul spearheaded by Roberto De Zerbi. Fernandes is one of several lucrative transfers who has flown through their doors in the last few weeks.

In total, Fernandes cost Spurs £85 million. This may seem steep for a player who has been relegated twice (including with Southampton in 2024/25), but his young age must be taken into account.

Sandro Tonali

Bruno Guimaraes wasn’t the only top player who left Newcastle in the ongoing transfer window. Prior to his departure, Sandro Tonali also took his leave from Tyneside.

We weren’t kidding when we said that Tottenham were looking to break the bank – this is the second player on the list who has made the jump to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium recently.

He was even more expensive than Fernandes was, costing the Lilywhites a monolithic figure of £100 million to complete the deal. One of the most talented midfielders in the world, at just 26 years of age, the best is yet to come from the Italian international.

Elliot Anderson

Elliot Anderson always looked set to leave Nottingham Forest this summer, but the Trees weren’t willing to let him go without an almighty struggle.

They made it clear that they wouldn’t let him go for anything less than a record-breaking fee. Then, along came Manchester City, who had the finances to pull off such a deal.

Agreeing to a fee of £116 million, Anderson swapped the City Ground for the Etihad Stadium on July 2. His successful World Cup campaign with England, in which the Three Lions finished in third place, only boosted his market value.

Morgan Rogers

Anderson’s record fee of £116 million did not last until the end of July. Just 19 days later, Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a price of £117 million, making him the most expensive English footballer of all time.

Not only is Rogers the most expensive English footballer ever in terms of a single transfer fee, he’s also the fourth-most expensive footballer of all time. Only Alexander Isak, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar can boast of higher valuations.

At 24 years of age, the best is yet to come from Rogers. He was immensely successful at Villa, but can he go above and beyond at Stamford Bridge?
