Being a goalkeeper is never easy – the loneliest position in football, they’re often made to be scapegoats. Today, however, we’ll be giving the men between the sticks their richly-deserved props.

We’ll be looking at the five most valuable goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, according to data from Transfermarkt.

‘Keepers from teams such as Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal will feature in this list – can you guess who they are?

James Trafford

James Trafford may have experienced a difficult start to life in the Premier League, but he is still only 23 years of age – his best years are still well ahead of him.

There are no issues with his ability, but his nervous energy has led him to make mistakes which have cost Manchester City goals so far this season. Of course, this timidness will fade as he gains experience.

He made a brilliant save against Brighton earlier on in the campaign and enjoyed a wonderful season at Burnley in 2024/25 – you certainly can’t write the Cumbrian off just yet.

Guglielmo Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario has been the subject of criticism at Tottenham over the last few weeks, but he remains one of the leading goalkeepers in the Premier League at the moment.

He was relatively lesser-known before his arrival at Spurs – he had big shoes to fill, as he was brought in to replace long-standing shot-stopper Hugo Lloris.

Outside of a few hiccups here and there, Vicario has generally provided a strong presence between the sticks for the Lilywhites, even if he has been somewhat off the boil recently.

Bart Verbruggen

Bart Verbruggen is perhaps the most unexpected name on our list, but given his natural talent and his young age of just 23, his inclusion shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Verbruggen has already carved out a spot in The Netherlands’ first team for his efforts at Brighton – he enjoyed success at Anderlecht prior to his move to the south coast.

The Dutchman has made 35 saves this season over the course of 13 Premier League games. Additionally, he also has a save percentage of 66.7% to his name as things stand.

David Raya

Is David Raya the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment? Perhaps – he looks set to capture his first Premier League title at the end of the season, as Arsenal are currently flying at the top of the table.

An outstanding shot-stopper with no real weaknesses, Raya has ironed out the flaws that used to plague his game. Aged 30, he is now in his absolute prime.

He has only made 21 saves this season, but this can be attributed to the quality of Arsenal’s defence. He has a save percentage of 75% – he has be reliable when called into action.

Gianluigi Donnarumma

If David Raya isn’t the best goalkeeper in the world, then it may very well be this man. Gianluigi Donnarumma has been a world class talent for over a decade now, despite only being 26 years of age.

In Donnarumma, the Italian public saw a worthy successor to beloved goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. He hasn’t hit Buffon’s heights just yet, but he is well on his way to getting there.

Donnarumma is prone to a moment of madness, but he is also capable of making saves that no other ‘keeper in the world can pull off. In this case, PSG’s loss has certainly been City’s gain.
