The Premier League title race has thrown up some close finishes in previous seasons. There have been a few in which just an additional point was enough to ensure the top team lifted the trophy. For the most part, the title race has been dominated by Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Man Utd, and Chelsea throughout Premier League history.

2011/2012

The best Premier League title race finale was Manchester City’s 2012 triumph. During that season, Man City defeated Man Utd in both of their games, but despite this, they could not gain a notable lead at the top of the league. In the final games of the season, City and Utd were level on points, but City topped the table with a higher goal difference.

In the final game of the season, Man City took on QPR. In the first half, they went in front, but QPR also scored twice to establish a 2-1 lead at the break. However, two late City goals ensured a 3-2 victory, and thus their first Premier League title. Both teams ended the season with 89 points, but with a 64+ goal difference, it was City that was crowned Premier League champions.

1994/1995

In other title races, Manchester Utd were also pipped to the Premier League title. In 1995, it was Blackburn Rovers that were topping the table, and by the final game of the season, they had a two-point lead. In their final match, they visited Anfield, but some expected that Liverpool would roll over for Blackburn so that they would win the league ahead of Utd. Having already qualified for Europe, Liverpool did not have to win the match, except to add a few more league points to their final total.

However, Liverpool did not stick to the script at Anfield. During the match, they came from behind to establish a 2-1 lead. Elsewhere, Utd were held 1-1 at West Ham, despite dominating the game. Rovers had much to thank the West Ham keeper, who made a string of saves. As those were the final scores, Blackburn still clinched the title by one point (89 points in 42 games) despite losing to Liverpool. It’s interesting to note that had it still been two points for a win in that season, then Utd would have emerged as champions with a higher goal difference.

1998/1999

The 1999 Premier League title race was another close one. Then Arsenal were the champions, and in the run-in looked like they could hold the title as they notched up some great victories, such as a 3-1 victory against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. However, Man Utd too were in form, and there wasn’t much in it by the final game of the season.

But Leeds Utd’s 2-0 win in their match with Arsenal had provided Utd with a one-point lead going into the final game. Then they played Tottenham at Old Trafford, although the visitors went a goal up. Utd got back in the game with an equalizing goal, and when they scored a second, the title was almost secured. Arsenal’s 1 – 0 victory did not make any difference as Utd finished top of the table with 79 points. They had lost just three league games, but a number of draws almost cost them the title and the triple.

2018/2019

The 2018/2019 title battle between Manchester City and Liverpool was perhaps the best two-horse race in Premier League history in terms of standard. Liverpool and Manchester City fought tooth and nail for the Premier League title during that season, with only a point separating them on the final day. In the end, Manchester City emerged victorious with a 4-1 win against Brighton on the last day of the season to clinch the title with 98 points, one ahead of Liverpool. Liverpool were one of the unluckiest runners-up with a points total of 97 that would have won the Premiership in almost any other season.

2015/2016

The 2015/2016 season wasn’t among the closest Premiership title races, but it produced by far the biggest shock with Leicester City emerging as champions. Both Arsenal and Tottenham should have pushed the Foxes harder in a race Leicester won by a 10-point margin with a title-winning points total of 81. While the other top five teams from that season took many points off each other, Leicester City found a way to grind out the results it needed to finish on top of the pile.

This was a great title race because it showed relatively small clubs could still rise and rock the big boys in the Premier League era of English soccer. It was a fantastic Roy of the Rovers fairytale moment in Premiership history. To cap it off, Gary Lineker stuck to his promise by hilariously introducing Match of the Day in his underpants after his beloved Leicester won the title.
