Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho addressed the struggle under Ruben Amorim that led to the incessant transfer rumours about him. The Argentina international has struggled with inconsistency this season, despite featuring regularly for the Red Devils under the Portuguese manager.
United have suffered immensely from the disastrous campaign, currently 15th in the Premier League table with 16 losses this season. The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag in the middle of the current season to replaced him with Amorim immediately.
However, the managerial transition proved too much for the current squad due to the drastic shift in tactical playing style. Amorim deploys a three-man defensive formation with a vast variation in roles, employing two attacking wingers among two central attackers.
The former Sporting CP boss let the likes of Antony and Marcus Rashford leave on loan during the last January. For the wings, Amorim relied on Garnacho, along with Amad Diallo and makeshift midfielders like Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.
However, Garnacho struggled a lot under the new tactical demands, failing to maintain his consistency and contributing poorly to United. The 20-year-old Argentinian made 54 appearances in all competitions for United this season, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists.
Garnacho’s struggle and rising frustration among the fanbase brought a lot of criticism and potential transfer uncertainty towards the attacker. United’s financial issues and their plan to sell players before buying new ones only added to the rumour mill’s speculations. Latest rumours suggested that the 20-year-old could leave the club for at least £65m, with Chelsea interested.
Garnacho addressed his struggle under Amorim with the media (via Daily Mail), highlighting his mentality to overcome them at United. He said:
“Obviously, the manager knows the characteristics of the players. You see the games, too many times I play, for example, wide on the wing and the wing back is coming inside. What we try to do depends on the players we have and we are improving as a team also. It’s a little bit hard but it’s just the mentality. My first two months, November and December were very difficult for me, but my mentality is to keep working, to keep trying and show to the manager and staff I have to play.”
The fanbase should not forget that Garnacho is just 20 years old, and inconsistency is part of the game at that age. Rest assured, regular playing time under Amorim will help the Argentinian adjust to the new tactical demands at the club.
