Manchester United’s summer business has been slow to get started, but things look to be picking up, with the club now turning their attention towards signing a striker.
The Red Devils’ summer transfer window has yet to deliver much in the way of results. It’s not the start fans were hoping for, but there’s still time to turn things around.
Matheus Cunha came in early, and now Bryan Mbeumo looks set to follow. Reports suggest a £70 million deal is close to being agreed, giving Jason Wilcox reason to feel more positive.
Adding Mbeumo and Cunha brings 35 goals from last season into a team that managed just 44 across the entire campaign. It’s a significant boost for an attack that struggled badly last year.
United have been linked with nearly every top striker in Europe over the past six months, but most of those options are now off the table.
However, Ben Jacobs told The United Stand that Benjamin Sesko could be one to keep an eye on for United.
“I still think we might see some legs in the Benjamin Sesko saga. United went for him 12 months ago, he’s not going to Arsenal because of Viktor Gyokeres, Chelsea are one to watch. So I can see a scenario where United turn to him.”
This ties in with TBR Football’s report that Sesko’s representatives have kept the club updated on his plans. Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell has long been a fan, once telling Bundesliga:
“Benjamin Sesko is among the game’s top young talents and has enormous potential to become a top player. He has all the qualities to do that. He’s extremely quick, has a great jump on him, and is strong in the air.
“Benjamin is a real goalscorer, who despite his 1.95m (6’4″) is mobile and technically strong. His abilities make him a special player with a special profile.”
Sesko might not have been United’s first choice at the start of the summer, but as things stand, he looks like the most realistic option if the club decides to invest heavily.
Leipzig have reportedly set a £86m asking price, but there are suggestions they’d be willing to accept around £68m instead.
United have kept tabs on Sesko throughout the window, and it’s becoming clear how well he could fit into Ruben Amorim’s system alongside Cunha and Mbeumo.
His pace forces defenders to drop deeper, which would open up space for Cunha and Mbeumo to exploit – something both players are more than capable of taking advantage of.
Sesko’s style naturally complements their strengths. The question now is whether United can make it work financially, but there’s no doubt this window has started to show some real promise for them again.
