The European Cup, now the UEFA Champions League, has had many great players. As Europe’s top club event, it has included excellent players, primarily from Europe and South America. These are a few of the greatest players who have played in that cup.

Raúl González Blanco

Raul Gonzalez Blanco scored 71 times in the Champions League era. With Real Madrid, he was the top scorer in the competition twice. He won the Champions League three times. For Spain, Blanco struck 44 goals for his country. His leadership, clinical finishing, technique, and versatility made him one of the all-time great players in European Cup history.

Paolo Maldini

Paolo Maldini was perhaps the most consistent player and best defender in the European Cup, with flawless positional play and defensive anticipation. He played in 116 Champions League games (a record number for an Italian player). He was the oldest player to score in the Champions League final when he netted against Liverpool in 2005. Maldini won five European Cups with AC Milan.

Alfredo Di Stefano

Alfredo Di Stefano was a great player of the European Cup with good stamina and versatility. For Real Madrid, he scored 49 goals in the European Cup in 58 games played. Stefano was a key player of the Madrid teams that dominated the early European Cup and was twice the top goal scorer in that competition.

Ferenc Puskas

Ferenc Puskas was a great Hungarian footballer. For Hungary, he was their top goal scorer. At the club level, he starred for Real Madrid in the 1950s. For Madrid, he scored almost a goal a game in the European Cup, with 36 scored in 41 matches, and scored seven goals in a couple of European Cup finals. Many regard Puskas as one of the best soccer players generally, and he is included in the FIFA 100 great players.

Marco Van Basten

Marco Van Basten was a great forward for AC Milan and the Netherlands. In 1989, he won the European Cup with Milan, was the top goal scorer, and scored two goals in the final. He also won a second European Cup with the club. Van Basten is one of only a few players who have scored four goals in a Champions League game. Van Basten was also European Footballer of the Year three times during his playing career.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Christiano Ronaldo was the most prolific goal-scoring player in the Champions League, having scored a record 140 goals in UEFA’s flagship tournament. He was influential in Real Madrid’s run of Champions League domination, when the Spanish giants won four European Cups from 2014 to 2018. Ronaldo also won the Champions League when playing for Manchester Utd, scoring the crucial goal against Chelsea in the 2008 final. Ronaldo was an almost unstoppable player in the Champions League with amazing pace, outstanding off-the-ball movement, strong aerial prowess, impeccable ball control, and lethal finishing.

Lionel Messi

The great Lionel Messi vied with Ronaldo for the Champions League scoring record and scored 129 goals in that competition. He won four Champions League titles when starring for Barcelona’s greatest sides. In terms of on-the-ball brilliance, skill, and technique, Messi was perhaps (and maybe still is) a superior player to Ronaldo, even though the Portuguese star beat him in the European Cup scoring stakes. Messi’s creativity and dribbling were dazzling when at the peak of his game.
