Manchester United are approaching another transfer window with important decisions to make about the future shape of their defence.
Michael Carrick has already experienced how quickly injuries can leave his team short of reliable options, particularly in the full-back positions.
Luke Shaw has struggled with fitness issues, while Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui have also been sidelined this season.
That has increased the responsibility on Diogo Dalot.
Although United have younger players who could eventually step up, strengthening the squad with a defender capable of developing over several seasons could be an attractive option.
The club must also weigh the cost of recruitment against its other priorities after criticism of its recent transfer strategy.
According to O Jogo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United are among four European clubs tracking Benfica right-back Daniel Banjaqui, with Newcastle United, Barcelona and Inter Milan also gathering information ahead of a possible January move.
The 18-year-old has been progressing through Benfica’s system since joining from Real SC in 2018.
His development gathered momentum during the 2025/26 season, when he gained experience with the club’s youth sides, reserves and senior team.
Daniel Banjaqui made his senior debut in December 2025, appearing off the bench in a Portuguese Cup victory over Farense.
He later started against Estrela da Amadora in the league, providing an assist in a 4-0 win.
His progress has continued into the current season, with further senior appearances and an opportunity to feature against AC Milan in the Europa League.
