It’s a big Season ahead for Arne Engels, one where he can fully fulfil his potential, and he’s got the perfect mentor in Brendan Rodgers…

Arne Engels is currently the club’s record signing after Brendan Rodgers convinced the hierarchy to splash out £11 million for his signature as the Belgian joined Celtic from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg last summer.

Some forget that Arne is still only 21

Some forget that Arne is still only 21 and has much to learn in the game, but as debut seasons go he faired reasonably well, and much better than some would have you believe. They should remember that Celtic didn’t but the finished article, they bought a 20 year-old midfielder that the club believe can turn into a top class player at Champions League level and of course will become much more valuable than the sum Celtic paid for his signature.

Arne Engels scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in his debut season

In 54 games across all competitions last season the Belgian international scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists helping the club to two trophies and a had decent showing in the revamped UEFA Champions League.

Arne has great composure on the ball and the vision for a great pass, but it’s a trait that often goes overlooked by his critics in the Celtic support. He’s not a Reo Hatate type player that catches the eye of the supporters, but he’s still a main cog in our midfield and a vital player in Brendan’s team.

Next season is a big one for Arne Engels

Next season is a big one for Arne Engels and under Brendan’s guidance I’ve no doubt that he will blossom into an even better player. He only needs to look at the likes of Matt O’Riley and Daizen Maeda for encouragement, both of whom are a perfect example of players who have upped their game a level under the Irishman.

Here’s a look at how Sandman rated Arne’s first season in the Hoops in his brilliant season review on The Celtic Star and if you missed it here is where to find it.
