A player who appeared not to have a future at Manchester City came out of this season with credit

During the early stages of the 24/25 season, it appeared that Matheus Nunes just wouldn’t fit in at Manchester City. He was brought by the club to play in midfield ahead of the 23/24 season. But the Portuguese international couldn’t find a role in Manchester City’s midfield. It appeared that he may be surplus to requirements at the club due to his inability to slot into City’s struggling midfield during the first half of the 24/25 season.

But after the January transfer window concluded, a role opened up for Matheus Nunes. He slotted in at right-back after Kyle Walker left the club to join AC Milan on loan . From there, Nunes played a key role for Pep Guardiola’s side. He comes out of this season with credit for what he did for his team. Matheus Nunes also showed that he could be an important squad player for Manchester City for next season and beyond.

In all competitions throughout the 24/25 season, Matheus Nunes made 39 appearances for Manchester City. He scored 4 goals and added 10 assists this season. During the second half of the season, he played primarily at right-back. But during the first half of the season, he also slotted in on the left wing. His versatility was a key attribute to his progress as a player this season. The pace and delivery from out wide of Matheus Nunes became an important part of Manchester City’s play. His overlapping runs from right-back were a feature of his play.

He stepped up Manchester City’s hour of need this season. Matheus Nunes deserves plenty of credit for that. The Portuguese international still makes the occasional error, but his efforts for his team should be lauded. If he didn’t play well at right-back during the second half of this season, perhaps Manchester City would have struggled to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Based on his efforts across the back half of the 24/25 season, there looks to be a role in the Manchester City squad for Matheus Nunes. He became a serviceable right-back across this season. Perhaps he isn’t good enough to be City’s first choice in the position, but he can be a valuable squad player for Manchester City. His ability to step into midfield or play on a wing does give him many strings to his bow. Those attributes could be important for Pep Guardiola’s side heading into next season.

Come the end of the 24/25 season, Matheus Nunes has come out of this season with credits to his name. That speaks to the important role that he played for Manchester City over the second half of this season. It appeared for the longest time that Matheus Nunes just didn’t fit in Pep Guardiola’s squad. But come the end of the season he has proven that he does fit in, and that’s a credit to him ans his play this season.
