Tottenham left-back Destiny Udogie has emerged as a defensive priority for incoming AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to prioritise defensive reinforcements in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The North Londoners have struggled for stability and consistency at the back throughout the campaign, with their defensive frailties proving costly in key moments. Spurs have managed just six clean sheets in the Premier League this season and have conceded 61 goals in 37 matches, a statistic that highlights their desperate need for defensive improvements.

Adding to the concerns, the Lilywhites could be set to lose one of their most important defenders. Cristian Romero, their defensive lynchpin, has expressed his desire to play in La Liga as he pushes for a move away from N17. Atletico Madrid are currently the frontrunners for the Argentine’s signature.

Now, it looks like another Tottenham defender is attracting interest from a European giant. According to a report from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, incoming AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare has made Destiny Udogie his defensive priority in the upcoming transfer window. The Spurs left-back’s signing will be prioritised if Theo Hernandez leaves AC Milan at the end of the season.

Destiny Udogie has been Spurs’ first-choice left-back since the start of the 2023/24 campaign. The Italian has delivered consistently strong performances, becoming a key figure in Ange Postecoglou’s system. However, like majority of his teammates this season, he has had to deal with injury setbacks, most notably a hamstring issue that sidelined him for a month.

Now back in the fold and fully fit, Udogie’s availability is a massive boost for Spurs as they gear up for the grand Europa League final against Manchester United. Having the Italy international available will undoubtedly strengthen Postecoglou’s squad as they push for European glory. The Verona native’s presence provides both defensive stability and attacking flair down the left flank, making him a valuable asset at both ends of the pitch.

However, the 22-year-old’s eye-catching performances have gone unnoticed, with AC Milan keen to sign him. Igli Tare is set to rebuild the Milan squad after they failed to qualify for any European competitions this term. After becoming the new sporting director, he is set to hire Vincenzo Italiano as the new head coach and bolster the defensive unit by adding Udogie to the club’s ranks, the aforementioned report adds.

Despite suggestions over a possible squad overhaul at N17 under a new head coach amid increasing pressure on Ange Postecoglou, Udogie’s position at the club remains safe. He is not seen as part of the likely revamp, considering how important the left-back has been to Tottenham.

If Milan accelerates their pursuit of the Italian international, Spurs would be within their rights to demand a sizeable fee. Negotiating a deal for the rampaging left-back won’t be straightforward, as Daniel Levy views him as a key part of the club’s long-term plans. And with his contract not expiring until 2030, Tottenham hold all the cards.

That said, the North Londoners remain firmly in a comfortable position regarding Udogie’s future amid interest from Milan’s incoming director Igli Tare.
