Igor Tudor has been given the interim keys to Tottenham Hotspur after the club parted ways with Thomas Frank last week.
Spurs’ alarming slide towards the relegation zone prompted the hierarchy to sack Thomas Frank after a wretched run of form had seen them collect just one win from 11 matches. Defeat at home to Newcastle United on Tuesday evening proved to be the final straw for the Dane.
Igor Tudor faces a baptism of fire as Tottenham gaffer as he comes up against arch-rivals and league leaders Arsenal on Sunday. The White Hart Lane faithful would love nothing more than to see Tudor oversee a victory and put a spanner in Arsenal’s title dreams. However, the no-nonsense Croat will be without a long list of players due to injuries, and the suspended Cristian Romero for the North London derby.
Cristian Romero recently made headlines for the wrong reasons, aiming a sly dig at the Tottenham board for not addressing the lack of squad depth during the January transfer window. After making those claims on his Instagram account, the Argentine got himself sent off for a reckless challenge on Casemiro in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
As it was his second red card of the season, the 27-year-old has been slapped with a four-game suspension. Due to Cristian Romero’s constant indiscipline, former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has urged Tudor to strip the defender of the captaincy and leave him out of the side. This comes a few days after Harry Redknapp had advised on the same.
“Cristian Romero is one of those typical players who just doesn’t learn. He’s got so much talent, but so many flaws which he hasn’t eradicated. He’s still making the same mistakes as when he first signed for Tottenham,” Sam Allardyce said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.
“Either he gets stripped of the captaincy, or someone says to him, ‘stay on your feet, I don’t want you to go to ground when you tackle anymore’, and if he continues to do it, then take him out of the side. He’s giving his managers a bad reputation for not being able to control him.
“If you’re a centre-half, your first priority is being a defender, not how good you are with the ball – that’s only an added bonus. Romero is just so irrational, which is alright when you first join a club, but he should have been nailed by Thomas Frank for it, and he wasn’t.”
The Arsenal fixture will see Romero serve the second of his four-game ban. If not for the stupid, ridiculous challenge on Casemiro, the central defender from Cordoba should’ve been leading his side in the North London derby at home.
The 27-year-old’s indiscipline has not only affected him individually, but also cost the team several points this season. Being the captain, leader and one of the most experienced players in the squad, it is high time Romero understands the role he plays for the team on and off the pitch. From Tudor’s perspective, he’d have loved to have Romero available for the derby.
Despite his hotheaded nature, the Argentina international can produce moments of magic at both ends of the pitch. The central defender has come up with some late goals to help Tottenham claim points this term, and his aerial ability and leadership will be a big miss vs. Arsenal.
