After breaking his duck against Crystal Palace, Erling Haaland is back amongst the goals heading into tomorrow night’s clash with Real Madrid. City’s number 9 will have a pivotal role to play across two legs against the La Liga leaders. But he will head to the Bernabeu buoyed by his goal at Selhurst Park. It is a positive sign for Manchester City as they prepare to face the 14-time European champions.

City’s number 9 will no doubt be the focus of attention heading into Tuesday evening. Erling Haaland so often is especially in the lead up to big games. But given the links of a potential future move to Real Madrid for Erling Haaland as reported by Spanish publication AS it does seem that he may be the subject of extra attention in the build up to tomorrow’s match.

But despite the outside noise, it does appear that Haaland will head to the Bernabeu with his confidence restored. He was well contained by Arsenal in City’s nil-all draw with the Gunners over a week ago. Haaland was then rested during Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa. City’s number 9 scored on the weekend and for a goalscorer such as the Norwegian striker the confidence gained from his strike at Selhurst Park should see him primed for the test that Real Madrid’s defence will provide.

Against the La Liga giants last season, Haaland failed to get on the scoresheet in the two meetings between the two teams. It wasn’t through his poor performances as Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois was determined to not let City’s number 9 score over the two legs. He was a crucial element of Pep Guardiola’s triumph over the Real Madrid last season. He could be again in this season’s quarter-final tie between the two teams.

Erling Haaland appears primed to take on the test provided by Real Madrid. He will have a pivotal role to play over the two legs of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. It may be crucial that City’s number 9 was back on the scoresheet on Saturday as it should see him enter the blockbuster tie full of confidence.
