After ‘Talking to Tottenham for some time’ first bid made for star with 2 seasons to run

This summer transfer window for Tottenham looks set, as ever, to be an interesting one, with another new manager at the helm after Ange Postecoglou’s fast ride second season, which resulted in some silverware and narrowly avoided relegation. Whether chairman Daniel Levy is interested in backing this coach or simply tossing the same variety of spreadsheet punts and mixed bargains remains to be seen. What we do know about Thomas Frank is that he can survive in England’s most prestigious division, without the requirement of eye-watering transfer fees being spent.  That last point alone suggests that, to a large extent, it will be business as usual for ENIC’s biggest shareholder.

One of the biggest stories involving Spurs is bound to be concerning Cristian Romero, who, it must be said, has made plenty of farewell-type noises, since waving the Europa League trophy around in Bilbao and that bus bearing the legend, ‘Winners’, in Seven Sisters. It’s now looking as if the story is gathering pace in the overseas media. As Sport is a huge voice in world football, it comes as no surprise that the involvement of a Spanish Club the size of Atlético Madrid would feature prominently.

As it stands, a bid of 55 million euros for the player has been made, plus €15 million in add-ons. Tottenham are asking for $70 million for the 27-year-old defender, and he has two more campaigns left at the Spurs. Cuti Romero finishes his current deal with us in 2027.

Premier League scout Mick Brown was quoted earlier by the Boy Hotspur as saying that he thinks things with this deal will speed up in the coming days because, as far as he knows, all parties are interested in getting it done.

Our view on any potential deal

I must confess, I wasn’t impressed with Cuti’s numerous comments on social media, nor was I surprised. I suspect that these remarks that sounded like ‘goodbyes’ almost certainly were just that. The player, as with many of his teammates, suffered with injury during his time at Tottenham, but that wasn’t the root of his discontent.

Spurs can almost certainly get what they want, say, perhaps in the region of €70 million, and this would, in turn, allow us to go again in the marketplace. For me, this is another Argentinian who put country before club, as with Giovani Lo Celso.
