Ajax 0-2 Inter Milan – UEFA Reveal Why Marcus Thuram Penalty Overturned By Premier League Referee

UEFA have explained why the referee team decided to overturn a penalty for a foul on Inter forward Marcus Thuram in the 2-0 win over Ajax.

As part of improved transparency, UEFA announced they would be providing referee explanations for key decisions involving VAR this season.

As part of this new initiative, UEFA have released their comment on the incident, via FCInterNews, that saw referee Michael Oliver overturn his initial decision after an on-field review.

Oliver blew his whistle and pointed to the spot initially.

UEFA: No Penalty For Foul On Thuram In Inter Win Over Ajax

Fortunately, Inter won the game anyway 2-0 and therefore the decision did not matter.

However, UEFA provided their justification anyway.

When Ajax’s Youri Bass held onto Marcus Thuram, Oliver pointed to the spot.

The VAR review confirmed that whilst there may have been a foul on Thuram, the Frenchman committed the first offence.

The manner in which Thuram shook off his marker was deemed to have been illegal.

Therefore, Oliver and his VAR overturned the decision.
