Atlanta United, coach Frank de Boer part ways

Three days after Major League Soccer side Atlanta United were eliminated from the MLS is Back tournament, Atlanta announced that the club and coach Frank de Boer mutually agreed to part ways.

De Boer joined the MLS outfit in December 2018 and guided the club to U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup titles. Atlanta defeated Nashville SC and FC Cincinnati in the opening two games of the 2020 campaign before MLS suspended play in March due to the uncontrolled virus outbreak.

De Boer's side never looked right during the return-to-play tournament held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Atlanta lost to New York Red Bulls, Cincinnati and Columbus Crew, and the club failed to tally a single goal in the tournament.

Atlanta United president Darren Eales said:

“On behalf of Atlanta United, I would like to thank Frank for his leadership and commitment to the club. Under Frank’s guidance, the club had a strong 2019 season in both MLS and international competition. After discussing it with Frank, the decision was reached mutually to part ways. In winning two trophies in his first season in charge, he will always be a part of the club’s history, and with great appreciation and respect we wish him all the best in the future.”

De Boer added:

“I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had with Atlanta United. Coaching in Major League Soccer and living in Atlanta has been a wonderful experience and a welcome new challenge. I will never forget the incredible supporters here in Atlanta, they are truly special. I want to thank the players, coaches and staff for all of their support, it has been my pleasure to work with all of you.”
