Salernitana have officially announced the arrival of former Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, who has signed on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old German centre back’s career has been derailed by off-pitch legal issues over the last few years, leaving him unattached at the end of last season. He spent six months on the training ground and was briefly linked with a return to Bayern before fans raised concerns.

Salernitana have proven themselves a safe haven for aging stars in recent years, welcoming Franck Ribery in 2021, Antonio Candreva in 2022 and Guillermo Ochoa last year. They currently need all the help they can get in Serie A, sitting bottom of the table with just 12 points after 22 games.

As confirmed today, Boateng has now signed a six-month contract with Salernitana, joining the club for the rest of the season. He’ll wear the number five shirt on the Campania coast and will now start integrating into coach Filippo Inzaghi’s squad.
