Mason Greenwood is facing an uncertain future at Manchester United as he spends the final months of his loan deal at Getafe. While another loan spell is still not ruled out, the Red Devils are reportedly leaning toward selling the English winger permanently.

Greenwood Moves Closer to Permanent Manchester United Exit

A Successful Loan Spell at Getafe

Greenwood arrived at Getafe a few months after charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour against him were dropped in February last year. The 22-year-old went on to secure a starting spot at Getafe, quickly regaining his best form after a year-long spell on the sidelines.

Greenwood has made a total of 26 appearances across all competitions for the team, registering eight goals and five assists. Mostly playing as a deep-lying winger, he has maintained the qualities that once made him one of the Premier League’s most promising young forwards.

Manchester United’s Stance

Making a decision on Greenwood’s future will be one of the first transfer choices made by INEOS as the club’s new part-owners.

Speaking on the English star’s situation last month, Sir Jim Ratcliffe told The Athletic: “There is no decision that’s been made. The process will be: understand the facts not the hype and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are yet to make a final decision on Greenwood’s future. However, they are ready to cash in on him if they receive a suitable offer in the summer.

The young forward’s contract expires in 2025. However, they are under no pressure to sell him this summer as they have the option to extend the contract for another year.

Three Spanish Clubs in Race to Sign Greenwood

Manchester United’s struggles in the attacking department have intensified rumours about a surprise decision to bring back the former academy star.

However, Greenwood himself would reportedly prefer to stay in La Liga and be far from the scrutiny he faces back in England.

Barcelona are heavily linked with a move for the Englishman as they look to bolster their attacking line ahead of the next season. In December, a report from SPORT claimed the Catalans are even open to offering their legendary No.10 jersey to him.

Atletico Madrid could also make a summer move for the Manchester United star, especially if they end up selling Joao Felix on a permanent deal. Another option for Greenwood is to stay at Getafe, with the club already expressing their interest in keeping him on a “permanent deal or another loan”.
