Xavi Hernandez has revealed the key position Barcelona have come up short in this season.

La Blaugrana are battling to finish in second place in the run in with Real Madrid ending their La Liga title defence.

Xavi has since opted to change his stance on leaving the club this summer with the former Spanish international remaining at the helm in Catalonia.

However, as part of the rebuilding project ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, Xavi is expected to bolster his squad with new signings.

The lack of a specialist holding midfielder has been highlighted by the manager with a gaping hole in his team following Sergio Busquets’ exit.

Busquets’ calmness and experience have been a loss and Xavi believes the position is vital for Barcelona.

“We’ve played many games without a natural defensive midfield pivot and that has damaged our season”, as per quotes from Marca.

“When we have picked Oriol (Romeu) or Andreas (Christensen) we’ve competed better. But, it’s a coaching error. This lack of dominance in midfield has weighed heavily on us.

“The target for next season is to have every position covered by two players.”

Barcelona host Real Sociedad in La Liga action tomorrow night before heading into the final three games of the season.
