The club’s decision-making between the posts has been shaped by form, confidence, and the tactical demands of Ruben Amorim’s system.
One high-profile signing was initially brought in to modernise United’s build-up play and replace David de Gea’s shot-stopping profile with a more progressive goalkeeper.
Andre Onana arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 from Inter Milan, following a Champions League final appearance, in a deal worth approximately £43.8 million.
Across his time at Manchester United, he made 72 appearances in all competitions, keeping 17 clean sheets, but his spell was marked by high-profile errors, confidence issues, and uneven performances.
By the start of the 2025–26 season, he had slipped down the pecking order after losing the trust of the manager, starting just one of United’s opening four league matches.
Ruben Amorim responded by installing Altay Bayindir as his temporary No. 1 before sanctioning the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18.2 million to stabilise the position.
With two goalkeepers now ahead of him, United opted for a season-long loan exit in September for Onana.
He joined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2025–26 campaign and immediately became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
His performances have been defined by regular minutes, improved command of the box, and a calmer presence, contrasting sharply with the pressure-heavy environment he left behind in Manchester.
The loan move has reopened conversations about his long-term future, with Manchester United now committed to a different goalkeeping direction.
Andre Onana has suggested he could be open to making his break from Manchester United permanent after rediscovering happiness on loan in Turkey with Trabzonspor, according to the Mirror.
That move now appears to have revitalised the Cameroon international, both on and off the pitch, and his comments suggest he may be ready to turn the page on his United spell altogether.
“I’m very happy, trust me. I’m living the best period of my life. I can’t complain, I’m very happy to be here,” Onana said when asked about life in Trabzon.
He went on to describe the connection he has formed with supporters, admitting it took time to adjust but has since become something he cherishes.
“Sometimes I’m driving and a car cuts in front of me. ‘Onana, stop, I want a photo.’ I think to myself, ‘Yes, but we can do this in another way.’ But when they see me, they’re happy, and so am I. It was difficult at first, but now I understand.
“They are my men, I love them, and I love this feeling. Because they are very passionate. It’s a wonderful thing. It’s something you can’t describe if you’re not here.
“But the time I’ve spent here has been perfect for me. I’m happy to be here. It’s a different lifestyle, but it’s great. Truly incredible, amazing.”
His performances have helped the club climb to third in the table, sitting seven points behind leaders Galatasaray and four adrift of second-placed Fenerbahce.
